The sun-drenched island also has some shadows in its past. The slave trade thrived in Zanzibar, as it was a prime trading post on the eastern African coast. Until the late nineteenth century, slavery was a major part of the town markets. Today, travelers can visit slave caves like Mangapwani and underground dwellings that leave testament to the dark period in Zanzibar's colorful history.
