Overview
The closest villa to the Abbey, this served as the caretaker's residence. A large spacious house which in past times had to accomodate two families given the fact that there exists two large fireplaces as well as a wood burning oven. A small stream runs between the lovely garden and the road acting as a natural property boundary.
The view of the Abbey from the house must be seen and would have provided a sense of security to the old retainers. At night the garden is magic with the larger trees lit complimented, in summer, by fireflies which appear and disappear among the rambling climbing roses. It is not uncommon to hear the nightingales song in the sheer silence envoloping the Abbey.
A hilly region rich in agriculture, Tuscany was the home of the Etruscan civilization, and later the birthplace of the Renaissance. Of all the Italian landscapes, tuscany's is the one that normally springs to mind. Spanning over 2500 acres, La Tenuta I Cavalli in Spineto encompasses approximately 70 km of private roads, framed by verdant valleys, a small lake, wooded hills and cultivated fields.
The villas are secluded one from the other, each in an isolated position that guarantees complete privacy and tranquility. The whole complex is managed from the ancient 13th century abbey that has been immaculately restored including the chapel and refectory (ideal for ceremonial occasion). An isolated but strategic position dominating the Orcia valley, on the way from Sarteano to Radicofani, the Abbey represents a typical example of an architectural complex that, through the centuries, has been involved in historical events that have changed its very structure.
The present owners bought the Abbey in 1989 and began a long period of restoration over fourteen years resulting in the complete recovery of the monastic building and twelve villas belonging to the property. One thousand years after its birth, the Abbey's new life seems the ideal continuation of the past, an evolution of the landmark that the Abbey already represented for the territory. Many guests never leave the estate during their stay, passing the time swimming, horse riding, walking, fishing and relaxing. On the edge of the vast nature reserve that makes the Val d'Orcia a perfect spot for nature lovers. All manner of flora and fauna can be found throughout the grounds including tuscan deer, wild boar, rabbits, foxes as well as plant life to satisfy any botanist.
