Overview
Honolulu conjures many familiar images — Diamond
Head’s dramatic profile; fragrant leis and Aloha shirts;
the landmark Aloha Tower; umbrella-topped rum
drinks in authentic Tiki bars. But a trip to Honolulu
wouldn't be complete without a trip to the more
somber USS Arizona Memorial, which honors the
2,388 Americans who died during the attack on Pearl
Harbor.
Hawaii’s “Big Island” may also be its most spectacular
— from snow-capped Mauna Kea to fiery Kilauea,
black-sand beaches and shimmering waterfalls to
sacred Waipi’o Valley and the sleepy villages of “old
Hawaii.” The western or leeward side of the island
enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year. And of
course, don't forget to try the coffee while you're
here.
Once the capital of Royal Hawaii and a wild whaler’s
village, Lahaina has carefully preserved its past.
Follow the Lahaina Historic Trail to see the restored
U.S. Seamen’s Hospital, the Pioneer Inn and the old
prison, each part of a large district listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to stop
beneath the iconic Banyan tree, planted in 1873.
Nawiliwili Bay serves as the gateway to Kauai,
Hawaii’s oldest major island. Long promoted as “the
Garden Isle,” Kauai’s celebrated landscape is beyond
words. Take in the crimson and rust shades of
Waimea Canyon. Hike Mt Waialeale, the rainiest spot
on earth. Gaze at dazzling Wailua Falls, often swathed
in a brilliant rainbow. Or explore the wondrous world
beneath the waves.
Host to over 75 sporting, culinary and cultural events
annually, Ensenada co-mingles international tourism
with day-to-day Mexican living. For a tasty margarita,
try Hussong’s Cantina, which opened its doors in
1892. There's also boxer Jack Dempsey’s former
casino, a favorite Prohibition hangout of the rich and
famous.
Take in unrestricted views of San Diego Bay from
Cabrillo National Monument. Stroll through the historic
Gaslamp Quarter. Visit Balboa Park’s California Tower,
the San Diego Zoo or the luxurious Hotel Del
Coronado, setting of the classic “Some Like it Hot.”
Catch a show at the world's first Omnimax Theater,
housed in The Reuben H Fleet Science Center. Or
head out to upscale La Jolla.
