Activities / What to do there?
- There are plenty of restaurants and local shops nearby, such as picturesque Les Baux, with its terracotta tiled roofs, lively St Remy where Van Gogh painted many of his most famous pictures, pretty Paradou and Fontvieille, and Maussane, one of France's most important olive-growing centres.
- What could be nicer than sampling some of the exceptional local olive oil on a piece of fresh bread or goat's cheese in the heat of a Provencal summer?! You can hire cycles in several of the villages and there are a number of livery stables in the area. Walking in the Alpilles hills is another attractive option.
- Should you decide to explore a little further afield, you may want to visit the Pont du Gard, the incredible triple height aqueduct built by the Romans to deliver pure water to the baths and fountains at Nimes (where you can visit the impressive arena), or Avignon, a UNESCO world heritage site, with its famous palace and bridge.
