Lake Como has many obvious attractions. This is a seductive landscape; soft green hills plunging into the clear water of the Lake, furrows filled with small orange/yellow villages sometimes veiled by cottony clouds. A warm-season resort for Milanese aristocrats since the 17th century, any vacation here demands relaxation and resuscitation. You will have every opportunity to slow your pace to the Italians; languid mornings, a long lunch, a nap, exercise and activity in the afternoon, a long evening meal. The fresh air is intoxicating -- clear and breezy, warm and wonderful. You will live with every window open and a comforting cotton blanket on your bed. Villa della Tremezzina is situated along the Lake in Tremezzo, the western shore of Lake Como opposite Bellagio. There are easy excursions by car to Cernobbio and Como; Lugano or Milan. You could include Bergamo or St. Moritz in your itinerary traveling by car or seaplane from the Villa's Lakefront. Close to home there are numerous small villages along both shores; Torno, Menaggio and Varenna are particularly charming. The Lake can best be explored by boat; swift and convenient service leaves from the dock in town and zigzags across and around the Lake. Private boat hires afford maximum enjoyment of the scenery, charming towns and sumptuous villas whose artistic, cultural and botanical interest have long been recognized. Prestigious golf courses are near at hand, in Como and Menaggio, as are opportunities for sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing. Villa della Tremezzina is the most important private villa on the Lake and still owned by descendants of the ancient and well-known Serbelloni family. The Villa was purchased in the mid-1600's by a descendent of Charles II, King of Naples, who settled his family there. During this time, the family hired the noted artists of the period to embellish the Villa with Baroque touches, all of which remain today -- exceptional stuche decoration, frescoes and furnishings. The Villa has been impeccably maintained by the owners, whose love for their home shows in the great care they take in its maintenance. A recent three-year renovation provides updated accommodation for a discriminating group of adults who can appreciate the exceptional beauty and quality of this home. The result is a uniquely historic environment for a most memorable vacation on Lake Como. The grounds of Villa della Tremezzina are dominated by a formal parterre, designed for enjoyment from the upper floors of the Villa where you can best appreciate the color and symmetry of its design. Beyond, along the road, is a tall gilt-trimmed gate ensuring privacy and adding an elegant foreground to the stunning Lake views that can be enjoyed from every window. The entrance drive winds through many mature plantings - cypress, laurel and chestnut trees. Pathways dappled with sunlight lead through this woodland garden affording wonderfully serene walks accompanied only by the sound of birds overhead. An upper gate opens to a sloping hillside, stairway and terrace with the Villa's vegetable garden on the left and the granite-rimmed pool (13 x 7 meters) on the right. Recently added changing room close to pool with bath and kitchen area with fridge and sink. Plenty of shade is available under the newly constructed cabana as well as a linen-draped pergola, with teak table and chairs for five. Sun beds and sling chairs, with two umbrellas, line the pool edge for enjoyment of sun or shade and the view up to the mountains behind. The Villa comprises a main building with three floors, plus two wings each with two floors. The top two floors of the main villa are preserved as a private museum containing the furnishings and personal effects of the family. (These exquisite and priceless rooms are not included in the rental, but can be shown to interested guests during their stay by a member of the family.) Throughout this refined private home are period antiques, objects d'art, paintings, engravings and prints of exceptional taste and quality dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The recent renovations have changed only the bedrooms, baths and kitchen, bringing them to the standard of a five-star hotel while preserving the design and quality of the 17th century. This attention to detail, including the actual fixtures in each bathroom, is what distinguishes Villa della Tremezzina from all other private homes being offered on Lake Como. All of the bedroom suites are similar, with Lake views and parquet floors, and only minor variations in size and layout. Each has been furnished with separate sitting areas, generally with desk and chair for writing, for the comfort of guests. Fabric for wall, drapes and coordinated bed linens, headboards and upholstery was manufactured for the renovation based on the Villa's original period designs. The beds are all traditional Italian -- wool mattresses on a firm box spring. All the ensuite bathrooms have been finished in Carrara marble, trimmed in pleasing shades of ivory and taupe, with showers and/or tubs. The fixtures have been custom-made to mimic the original plumbing in the house.
