The Distillery is located at Greenbank, an exclusive residential estate on the north central side of Tortola and within a 10-12 minute drive of the capital city of Road Town. According to Conde Nest Traveler, The Distillery overlooks perhaps the best beach on the island. Situated 800 feet above sea level, it enjoys gentle trade winds and delightful weather all year round, one of the few spots where neither air-conditioning nor heating is necessary or desirable.
Set on eight secluded and lush acres, The Distillery stands steeped in over two colorful centuries of West Indian history. Formerly the site of an indigo plantation, a sugar cane plantation and then a rum distillery until the 1950's, this magnificent estate is now welcoming privileged guests. The property offers acres of tropical gardens, meadows and forests.
The current owners acquired the property and designed and built their tropical paradise, incorporating the distillery ruins into the magnificent estate. Remains of the buildings, furnaces, grinding presses and boiling pots remain intact and form an integral part of the compound. The Distillery is testimony to the owner's impeccable taste; every detail of this historical landmark was re-designed to maximize luxury and comfort while offering the utmost in privacy and respecting the plantation's heritage.
The Distillery is built as two modern pavilions set among original stonework ruins which have been converted into whimsical areas and incorporated into the fantastic gardens.
The Great House is wonderfully appointed and offers the Great Room with separate living, dining and bar areas that provide the ultimate in tropical living. Spacious and open and superb for entertaining, this stunning room is graced with 20' ceilings and antiques from around the world. as well as classic wicker and cushioned sofas and chairs. The Great Room is truly the heart of this villa and offers a comfortable and central gathering place with several sitting areas as well as wet bar.
The Great Room's doors open to an extensive wrap-around verandah including a covered formal dining area overlooking the dramatic pool and spectacular views of Brewers Bay. This elegant dining alcove features a large glass topped Florentine "Palm" dining table as well as colonial styled chairs from the Philippines and massive tropical hardwood and glass doors that open to the tradewinds.
An adjacent stone staircase leads from the living area down to the pool and its bar and pavilion, also for dining. The extravagantly equipped kitchen with adjacent wine room, pantry and powder room has an independent access.
On the main level's upper level and accessed via a staircase outside the Great Room, is the "Bird's Nest" guest suite. The suite a king sized bed and full baths as well as a private sitting area which looks down into the Great Room.
Located on the garden level of the main villa, below the Great Room, is the Blue and White Suite which offers a two full beds and sumptuous sitting area well furnished with wicker and antiques. This suite, also, offers a coffeemaker and mini-fridge.
Stonework walkways lead through the exotic gardens to The Distillery's nearby cottage. The Cottage consists of an elegant master bedroom suite on the upper level complete with private decks. It is decorated in pastel shades of blues and yellow with Italian floors and a four poster bed. The master bedroom offers an en-suite bathroom, dressing area and walk in closet. An office/TV room is located just below in a very private study. The office is nicely equipped with high speed Internet, kitchenette, single day bed and bathroom. The area may be used an additional guest suite.
Located above the main villa and cottage is a dramatic walkway lined with mahogany trees. IT leads to The Distillery's tennis court and gazebo.
The Studio is a delightful artist's studio/guest house up Mahogany Row and adjacent to the tennis court. IT if very private and offers its own kitchenette and bathroom. Fabulous views of the bay may be enjoyed from the gazebo situated off the tennis court.
A three bedroom self-contained gatehouse complete with private private courtyard is located off the entrance and may be used for guests or staff. The original gatehouse provides open plan living, dining and kitchen, guest bedroom and bathroom with wonderful wooden terrace that overlooks vast tropical gardens rich with avocado, banana and coconut palms-and Brewers Bay beyond. The master bedroom suite is located in the new gatehouse addition together with an additional guest suite.
Steps lead from the main villa down to the pool and pavilion. An expansive pool (heated, if desired) with a fountain is set into a lush green lawn bordered by exotic island flora and trees. The pool pavilion is nicely equipped with a wet bar, gas grill, mini-fridge and furnished for poolside dining. Just below the pool and sundeck are acres of meadows where the two resident donkeys graze as well as some sheep and a handful of chickens.
A courtyard, dominated by the artfully restored distillery ruins is now surrounded by lush gardens and a variety of palms. The main boiling room with its huge 200+ year old sugar coppers is today's perhaps the most romantic al fresco dining spot. An adjacent stone building which once housed a former rum barrel warehouse has been converted into a whimsical English style pub, called the "Pig's Eye Pub". It offers a snooker table, working jukebox and elaborate bar and provides wonderful entertainment for guests.
Behind is a well equipped exercise alcove equipped with satellite TV and exotic alfresco shower.
