- Causses and Cévennes: Pristine Terroirs and Nature in the French southern Massif Central.
- The whole region is of a wonderfully pristine beauty, both wild and authentic. The nearby Vis River is said to be one of the 4 cleanest streams in France.
- The area is home to a wide variety of fauna, such as the Golden Eagle, which is indigenous to the Causses and Cévennes regions.
Activities / What to do there?
The Vis River used to supply a wide network of mills producing either olive oil or flour. “They have disappeared today, but their historical importance has left a legacy of deep respect for the river », says the Mayor.
- EXCEPTIONAL FLAURA AND FAUNA
The area is home to a wide variety of fauna, such as the Golden Eagle, which is indigenous to the Causses and Cévennes regions.
From the terrace of the castle, using our telescopes, you’ll be able to take in the majestic spectacle of the Golden Eagle’s flight.
A registered and protected site since 1983, the Navacelles Cirque, situated less than 15 km from the castle, is the largest canyon in Europe. It offers one of the most popular panoramas of southern France, and is the most visited site in the region. The heights of the Causses de Blandas, which are even closer to the castle, offer the most breathtaking view of the area. This geological marvel, boasting a 300-meter-deep canyon crafted over thousands of years by the Vis River, is truly a sight to be seen.
4000 years ago in Languedoc, the Garrigues and Causses regions were much more populated than they are today. The many dolmens in the area are beautiful remnants of their burial grounds.
These farmers lived in villages scattered across the region. Their civilisation developed advanced metallurgy techniques, and crafted quality copper tools and weaponry.
Go sightseeing and sample the local fossils, menhirs and dolmens. The Rogues district, to which the Madières castle belongs, boasts vast amounts of fascinating Neolithic marvels.
- THE CEVENNES NATIONAL PARK
A living conservatory: the mountainous Cévennes National Park of Southern France, set between the Auvergne and Languedoc regions, boasts over 1500 species of plants – a third of all French plant species.
