Day 4 Cu Chi Tunnels and Highlights of Saigon

Today's morning tour takes you to visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. This incredible underground tunnel network was constructed by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The tunnels show the ingenuity and resoucefulness of the Vietnamese people. During your visit you will see the secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. You return to Saigon for lunch at Hoa Tuc restaurant. In the afternoon, your private city tour of vibrant Saigon includes the landmark Reunification Hall, formerly known as the Presidential Palace. It was towards this modern building that Viet Cong tanks rolled on the morning of April 30, 1975 as Saigon fell. This fascinating building is filled with history still fresh in the minds of many. Your tour also includes the red-brick Catholic cathedral of Notre-Dame, the nearby 19th century Empire-style Post Office, and the next door ‘Hotel de Ville' or City Hall all look indomitably European, in contrast, you visit the Thien Hau Temple, a Chinese temple in Cholon, the packed and bustling Chinatown of the city. This evening you will have dinner at Mandarin Restaurant.

Day 5 Introduction to the Mekong Delta

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and assist you to your boat which is docked in the Mekong Delta in the town of Cai Be. Upon arrival you board the boat where a welcome drink awaits you. You are introduced to the crew and shown to your cabin. Your boat sets sail towards Cho Lach on the Tien Giang River while you enjoy lunch on the upper deck. You are invited to rest and relax on the deck as the boat cruises into Cho Canal. A short cruise takes you through local traffic of sand and rice barges, fruit drying facilities and wooden ship building yards, life on the river. Your first stop is a village on the banks of the river Mang Thit where you have the opportunity to appreciate the hospitality and way of life of the locals as you visit the nearby orchards and rice fields. After re-boarding the boat, enjoy a " welcome back aboard" drink as you return to your lounge chair on the deck to watch the magnificent sun set on the Delta. A lovely dinner is served while the boat is cruising the Mang Thit River. This evening the boat sets anchor in front of Phuoc Huu Pagoda in Tra On.

Day 6 Floating Markets and Leisure in Can Tho

Breakfast is available on deck while the boat cruises to Tra On Floating Market. After a visit to the colorful market, your boat sails towards Can Tho. Upon arrival at the Cai Rang floating market you transfer on to a local boat to visit the market, the nearby canals and gardens ending at the Ninh Kieu pier late in the morning. You are met by your guide and taken for lunch at Nam Bo Restaurant before heading to your resort which is just outside the town with charming gardens and river views.

Day 7 Through the Mekong Countryside by Boat and Bike

This morning you depart from the hotel jetty in a traditional boat with bicycles on board. You cross the Hau river then cruise on the Cai Von canal where you stop to visit an incense making community. Continuing on by boat you arrive at a tiny village where you unload your bicycles and begin a tranquil ride along the quiet trails crossing dykes and paralleling the rice paddies. You are open to the sounds and smells and capture the unusual sites of water buffaloes, duck keepers, fishermen and other artisans of the land. Once your ride is complete you return by boat to the hotel where lunch awaits. This afternoon you can do some more cycling, try the spa or just relax by the pool.

Day 8 Chau Doc, The Chams and the Cambodian Border

On the way you stop in the village of Long Thanh to see the basket making for which they are justly famous. Upon arrival at your hotel you have lunch overlooking the expanse of the river. After lunch you visit a local market which overlooks the confluence of three rivers, and later take a boat to the Chau Giang district where a tiny mosque serves the local Cham community. The Cham dominated coastal Vietnam from the 2nd to the 9th centuries and were originally Hindu but became Muslim as a result of contact with Arab seafaers and Merchants. The Chams also practice silk weaving and you may have the opportunity to see them at work. You'll visit a beautiful Khmer temple and later visit the floating houses that double as catfish farms, now a huge industry for the country.

Day 9 Chau Doc to Saigon

After breakfast, your driver is waiting to drive you back to Saigon with a stop for lunch along the way. this evening you start out with a cocktail at the roof top bar at the Rex Hotel where  reporters such as Sam Donaldson, Morley Safer and Dan Rather would "report from" during the war.
