You board your Business Class flight to London.
Day 2 Welcome to London
Upon arrival in London you will be met by your driver who will take you on a brief tour through the countryside and into London where you will see all the major sights in a brief orientation tour before arriving at your hotel. We have booked you a table for lunch which gives you the chance to unwind and discuss your upcoming experience. After lunch you have the option of taking a walk in the neighborhood (Buckingham Palace is close by) or taking a leisurely bath to re-hydrate from the flight. The evening has been left open since many people opt for a light snack and an early sleep.
Day 3 London Theatre, Then and Now
After breakfast, your host will meet you at the hotel to first take you to the replica of the Globe Theatre created as it would have been in Shakespeare's time. You'll have a guided tour of the current theatre and then visit excavations of Elizabethan theatres now underway. You will then board a boat for a trip across the Thames to Covent Garden where the Royal Opera house is located. This was formerly the site of London's flower market and the place where Professor Higgins first encounters Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. You will have lunch in the Covent Garden area before attending a matinee performance in London's celebrated Theatre district.
Day 4 The Drive to Salisbury
This morning you head inland to the city of Winchester and its remarkable Cathedral, which you take time to visit. After lunch you continue to Salisbury and your hotel, where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure.
Day 5 Stonehenge, Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral
You rise early this morning to drive to Salisbury Plain. We want you to get there as early as possible to view the ancient and mysterious monolith that is Stonehenge. Your guide will explain the history of the structure and give some theories as to its use and purpose. You then move to Old Sarum which was an ancient village, Roman fort and the site of the first Salisbury Cathedral. Because of a fight between the clergy and the soldiers of Salisbury castle, a new Cathedral was built in "New Sarum" now known as Salisbury. You will drive into Salisbury and as you enter the city you see what has been voted as "Britain's favorite view". We see the spire of the Cathedral and, in front, meadows with grazing cows the quintessential English view. Once in the town you have lunch and then tour the cathedral before returning to your hotel.
Day 6 Wilton House and the Villages of Wiltshire
Today you are heading to the regency town of Bath but you have some more sights in Wiltshire to visit before you do. Your first stop is Wilton House, the ancestral home of the Earls of Pembroke and located on 14,000 acres. Both the building and the grounds are magnificent and it has been the location for many films, particularly those related to Jane Austen novels. you will spend time touring the house. Your next stop is Castle Combe, dubbed "The prettiest village in England" and the location of the original "Doctor Doolittle" film with Rex Harrison. You next visit the village of Lacock which as been purchased in its entirety by the National Trust. After your exploration of the Wiltshire countryside you arrive in Bath.
Day 7 Exploring Ancient and Modern Bath
After breakfast you will commence a walking tour of Bath starting with the Roman Baths which made the town a center of Roman life at that time. Based on natural springs, the baths are still in working order today. Nearby is the Thermae Bath Spa which has modern baths based on the same hot springs. You will have time to walk the Royal Crescent an arc of 30 Regency houses and spend a little time in the footsteps of Jane Austen who lived in the city for five years and based her novels "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion" here. After lunch, the rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 8 Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey and the Arthurian Legend
Today you head to the heart of Somerset and the city of Wells. Here you see one of the most intact cathedrals still remaining in England. Your next stop is Glastonbury said to be the mythical Avalon. It is said that after the crucifixion, Joseph of Aramethea, Jesus' great-uncle came to Britain bearing the Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper which is supposedly buried here. Later, Glastonbury was associated with King Arthur and, in 1278 the monks excavated the spot where he was supposed to be buried. Seven feet down, they found a stone slab with the inscription (in Latin) "Here lies buried the renowned King Arthur in the Isle of Avalon". Guinevere was supposedly interred with him. Under the eye of Edward I, the bones were transferred to a black marble tomb in the Abbey. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries they disappeared and were never seen again.
Day 9 A Scenic Drive Through the Cotswolds
After breakfast you drive through some of the backroads of the Cotswolds passing through (and stopping at if you choose) picturesque towns with delightful names such as Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh. You will stop for lunch in a scenic inn before arriving at your hotel which will be your home for the next three nights.
Day 10 A Day at Stratford
We started our program in London visiting an exact replica of the Globe Theatre, site of many of Shakespeare's productions. Today you will visit the town where he was born and where his future wife was also born. After visiting his birthplace and the home of Anne Hathaway, his future wife, you will visit the Royal Shakespeare Company complex where we have set up a backstage tour. After lunch you will attend a matinee performance of one of Shakespeare's plays before returning to your hotel.
Day 11 Althorp, Sulgrave Manor and Warwick Castle
You journey out today to visit some country estates in the vicinity of your hotel. Your first stop will be Althorp, for five centuries the home of the Spencer family but more recently known as the final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales. You will visit the converted stable blocks turned into a Diana Exhibition by her bother the current Earl. You will then visit Sulgrave Manor which was the ancestral home of George Washington. You will visit the nearby church where a stained glass window brought from the Sulgrave Manor in 1830 shows the Washington crest which was clearly an inspiration for the Stars and Stripes. Your final visit of the day will be to Warwick castle considered to be the finest medieval castle in England.
Day 12 Return to US
Your driver will be ready to drive you to the airport for your return flight to the US.
