Day 1 Depart USA

Your adventure begins as you depart the USA bound for South Africa and arrive in Cape Town the following evening.

Day 2 Arrival in Cape Town

Upon your evening arrival in Cape Town you will be met by your guide and escorted to your hotel which is located on Camps Bay one of Cape Town's trendiest areas. Located between the "Twelve Apostles" named after a towering rock formation, and the ocean, the hotel is only ten minutes from the heart of Cape Town and yet feels like a tropical resort. Although you will be getting to the hotel later in the evening, you may want to have a nightcap at one of the upscale bars and eateries that abound in town before turning in.

Day 3 Cape Town Discovery
You will take the morning in a leisurely fashion to get adjusted, perhaps enjoying breakfast overlooking the ocean? Your guide will be at the hotel to take you to lunch and on a private tour of the city of Cape Town including the Houses of Parliament and Green Market Square. Your trip is capped by a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. Dinner is at Tides, located in your hotel.

Day 4 Exploring the Cape Peninsula

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up for a full day tour of the Cape Peninsula. You head south and, following the Atlantic coastline, visit the seaside towns of Hout Bay and Camps Bay. After lunch you traverse Chapman Peak Drive and Table Mountain National Park before ending up at the Boulders Penguin colony. This evening you enjoy dinner at one of Cape Town's landmark restaurants.

Day 5 Constantia and Stellenbosch

You begin your exploration of the Winelands by heading for Constantia which was the original wine state created by the Dutch governor in the 17th Century. Constantia wines have been sought after by Napoleon and Charles Dickens. Of the five major vineyards in the area, four are part of the old estate. You will enjoy some tastings along the way as well as enjoying a wine luncheon at the Alphen, an 18th century hotel that has entertained Captain Cook, Cecil Rhodes, Mark Twain and now you. In the early evening you reach your hotel which is, itself a vineyard with over 30 acres under vine with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Day 6 Comparative Tastings in Stellenbosch

In addition to being a well known wine area, Stellenbosch is also home to South Africa's second oldest university and this combination of academia and viniculture creates a town of sophistication and good taste. Your hotel will pack you a Winelands picnic which you will take in the car with you as you visit several of the renowned vineyards in the Stellenbosch area including several tastings. You have dinner in the town of Stellenbosch.

Day 7 Exploration and Tastings in Paarl and Franschhoek

The two other major wine areas in the region are Paarl and Franschhoek. The latter was started by French Huguenots and explains the French influence in an otherwise Dutch environment. You will enjoy samples of the wines of each area. Today's tasting expedition will be highlighted by a leisurely and appetizing lunch at La Petite Ferme, itself a boutique winery but noted for its magnificent views of the vineyards and the valley below with a luncheon menu to match the view. As a salute to your last evening in the Winelands your host at the hotel will create a menu complimented by four of the estate's own wines.

Day 8 Vineyard Inspection and Shamwari Game Reserve

This morning you have the choice of conducting an inspection of the vineyards on horseback or on a personal inspection with the vineyard manager. Either way, it gives you a chance to be among the vines. You host will pack a picnic lunch for you as you head for the airport for the flight to Port Elizabeth, your gateway to the Shamwari Game Reserve. You arrive in time for an afternoon game drive including sundowners and a dinner with wine under the stars.

Day 9 Shamwari Game Reserve

The Shamwari Game Reserve is privately owned and covers over 45,000 acres of reclaimed land. In the late 19th century this area teemed with wildlife but settlers game in and killed off the wildlife, put up fences and brought in cattle and sheep. The soil was overused and went into decline. Thanks to investor-conservationists, the farms have been purchased, fences taken down and the land returned to its previous state. Now the game has been re-introduced both for their freedom and your enjoyment. Your base is an Edwardian Manor House built in 1910 and allowing all the comforts but with ready access to the wildlife.

Day 10 A Day in the Game Reserve

After an early cup of tea or coffee you set off for a morning game drive as the animals begin their search for breakfast. Although the reserve is large, the rangers in each of the individual camps are in constant communication so the chances of seeing the "big five" are good on one of the drives. You return to camp for breakfast and the chance to relax during the heat of the day. In the afternoon you go our for another game drive followed by "sundowners" and a candlelit dinner.

Day 11 Morning Game Drive and Return to the USA

You have one last opportunity to take a pre-breakfast game drive before heading to the airport for a flight to Johannesburg where you connect with your flight home.

Day 12 Arrive in the USA

You arrive in the USA at breakfast time.
