You will start with Panama Vieja dating back to the 16th Century when Panama sent priceless metals back to Spain. You have the chance to explore a colorful marketplace and admire the hand-made art of the indigenous people. You will then proceed along the shore to the area known as Casco Antigua. Here you will explore on foot starting with the presidential Palace, built between the 16th and 17th Century, the cathedral and San Jose church with its magnificent altar. You have a leisurely lunch in the old town before heading across the causeway towards the canal. The drive gives you the opportunity to appreciate the modern skyline of the city a study in contrast with the old part of the city. You will be taken to Cerro Ancon a hilltop area that gives you a scenic view of the canal, the skyline and the old city. You then are taken to the canal itself and the Miraflores lock. You get an explanation of the canal before having cocktails and dinner at a restaurant as the ships pass by your window. An impressive sight to be sure.
Day 3 A Contrast of Cultures
Today you will spend the day in contrast between the technology of today and the eternal dignity of indigenous people who have little knowledge of, and little need of, many of the things we accept as part of our modern life. Your guide will meet you at the hotel and take you to the domestic airport where your helicopter awaits to take you on a one hour breathtaking aerial tour of the coastline, over Panama City and part of the canal. Returning to earth you are then driven to the west to Curutu. There you step into a boat which will take you up the Rio Chagres through jungle reaching down to the banks on either side of the river. You arrive at the camp of the Embera Indians. Aware of the outside world but still happy in theirs, you will find the people, especially the children, to be delightful. After a neighborly visit you will return downstream and then drive back into Panama City. After a chance to relax and freshen up we take you to a charming restaurant close to your hotel.
Day 4 The Scenic Journey to El Valle
After breakfast, your guide will be waiting to take you out of the city to a charming valley that was once the caldera of a volcano. The drive will take you along the scenic coastal route to San Carlos. El Valle is a small mountain village and your elegant hotel fits in with its surroundings. It is inspired by Tuscany and its quiet elegance will pit you at ease immediately. After checking in you have lunch and then have the chance to check out the hotel's facilities including the spa.
