Description of Private Journey - A House of Gold and a Church of Stone
- Seen from the Grand Canal, the Ca' d'Oro is a breathtaking sight: its pink and white stone facade appears to be made entirely of delicate lace and embroidery. Nothing remains of the elaborate marble exterior which gave this Gothic palace its nickname. The "House of Gold" was built for the aristocratic Contarini family in 1421 and now houses Baron Franchetti's extensive collection of paintings and sculpture. Works by Mantegna, Giorgione, and Alessandro Vittoria are displayed in the upstairs rooms overlooking the Grand Canal. A tour of the museum is followed by a walk through the picturesque alleyways of the Cannaregio district where the church of S. Giovanni Crisostomo stands in all its purity of form. Architect Marco Codussi combined the square and circle to represent the perfect relationship between man and the universe that was the hallmark of the Renaissance. Inside are precious altarpieces by Giovanni Bellini and Sebastiano del Piombo. Around the corner lived Marco Polo, whose famous book is recalled in two little courtyards - the Corte Prima and Seconda del Milion - named after the million marvels he encountered at the court of the Emperor Kublai Khan. The nearby church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli [begun 1481] has been called one of the most beautiful small buildings in the world. Sheathed entirely in exquisite panels of colored marble, the overall jewel-box effect is truly a miracle to behold.
