Day 1 Depart USA

You board your flight for the overnight flight to Vietnam and its capital, Hanoi.

Day 2 En Route

During your flight you will cross the International Date Line technically "losing" a day but you will regain it on your return flight.

Day 3 Welcome to Hanoi

Arriving in Hanoi you will be met by our representative. They will facilitate your expeditious move through customs and immigration and assist you with the retrieval of your luggage. Once in the arrivals hall you will be introduced to your personal guide and escorted out to your car where your driver is waiting. Arriving at your hotel, your guide will assist with check-in and coordinate the next day's agenda. You then are free to relax. This evening enjoy a quiet dinner in the hotel and a good night's rest.

Day 4 Cultural and Historic Highlights of Hanoi

After breakfast, you meet your guide at your hotel and depart on your private tour of Hanoi.Your first stop will be Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, as well as his private residence from 1954 until 1969. The wooden ethnic minority style house, which was built on stilts, is surrounded by lovely peaceful gardens. In the same complex you will see the One Pillar Pagoda, founded by King Ly Thai To in 1049. Your tour continues to the National Fine Arts Museum, located in colonial France's former Ministry of Information, which has an eclectic mix of contemporary Vietnamese art and sculptures. Your next stop will be the Temple Of Literature, Vietnam's first university. Constructed in 1070, the gardens and well-preserved architecture offer a relaxing glimpse into Vietnam's past. Enjoy lunch at the Wild Lotus restaurant before continuing on to Hoa Lo Prison (formerly known as the "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam war). The last stop of the day before returning to your hotel will be the Museum of Ethnology where you will get the chance to see Vietnam's diverse culture through the Museum's unique presentation of artifacts and dress used in daily life. Tonight, a special treat as you dine at Madam Tuyet's restaurant. A true Hanoian, Madam Tuyet learnt her culinary skills from her grandmother who used to cook for the French elite in the 1930's.

Day 5 Duang Lam and the Sleeper Train to Lao Cai

After breakfast you meet your guide who will escort you to the car for a trip into the countryside. Duoang Lam Village is situated northwest of Hanoi and is one of the few remaining ancient villages in the country. It has been recognized as a national relic boasting a twelve hundred year history with many houses dating back 400 years.You will have a chance to explore the ancient houses while wandering the narrow alleyways. You will also visit temples dedicated to the two kings born  in the village and, most interesting of all, the chance to chat with the locals living in the ancient houses. You will enjoy a typical Vietnamese lunch in a 100 year old house inside the village before returning to Hanoi. In the evening you will be met by your guide and taken to the prestigious Press Club for dinner. After dinner, you are taken to the station where superior sleeping car accommodations have been reserved.

Day 6 Lao Cai, Local Markets and Sapa.

You arrive in the early morning in Lao Cai which is the terminus closest to Sapa which is your ultimate destination. Sapa was developed by the French as a place to escape the heat of the summer. You are met at the station by your guide and driver. Your first stop will be a local restaurant where you have breakfast. After breakfast you will head to the local market which will vary depending on your day of arrival. Here you will begin your introduction to the hill tribes. In this area you will see mostly Flower Hmong but Phu La, Black Dao, Tay and Nung are also represented. The markets offer a variety of local products not normally found in other areas such as an animal market where pot-bellied pigs, cows and buffaloes can be seen. After lunch at a local restaurant you have the chance to visit a hill tribe village where you can visit the local homes to learn more about the daily life of these tribes as well as their culture and traditions before going to your hotel in Sapa.

Day 7 A Day Among the H'Mong

Today you will have a chance to walk through the scenic highlands and spend time among the hill tribes. After breakfast your guide and driver will take you to a small village where you begin your walking tour accompanied by your guide. You join a trail though beautiful gardens and a lush pine forest before arriving at the Black H'Momg village of Matra. The H'momg group is believed to have migrated from southern China into Vietnam over the last 300 hundred years and today they live extensively throughout the north of the country. Leaving Mantra you stroll through rice fields surrounded by spectacular scenery. You stop and enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. You may be lucky enough to see children attending a local school before you reach your waiting car for the drive back to the hotel where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure. This evening you have dinner at the Red Dao Restaurant.

Day 8 The Tay, The Dao and the Sleeping Car to Hanoi

Today you will spend your time in the heart of the Sapa Valley visiting the villages of the Tay and Dao tribes. You start with a car transfer along with your guide to Su Pan Village. From here you start your walk through the rice paddy terraces until arriving at the Tay Village of Ban Ho. The Tay, which also includes the Thai group are one of the largest ethinic groups in Vietnam and number 1.5 million. You have the chance to stroll the village before having lunch. after lunch you cross a scenic river to the Red Dao village of Nam Toong. Along the way you pass " la vie' waterfall and, if you have your bathing suit you can take a dip. the Dao ( pronounced Zao) are the 9th largest ethnic group in Vietnam with a population of just under 500,000. they belong to the Hmong Dao language group and are believed to have started migrating from China in the 13th Century. after your visit to the village your return to your hotel where you have a chance to relax. In the evening you meet your guide and head to the Steak House Restaurant for some western cuisine. After dinner you head to Lao Cai where your sleeping compartment awaits.

Day 9 Halong Bay and the Red River Delta

You arrive in Hanoi in the morning and your guide tales you to breakfast before heading out to Halong Bay.The journey through the rich farmlands of the Red River Delta allows you to enjoy the scenery of rice fields, water buffalo and everyday Vietnamese village life. Arrive in Halong and check in at the Emeraude Cafe. Feel as if you are stepping back in time to French Indochina as you board a wonderful replica of one of the classic steamships of the era. a welcome drink will be served as the boat leaves the harbor. Have lunch as you cruise among hundreds of islets to discover unspoilt pockets of Halong Bay and visit " Sung Sot" one of the most imposing grottos of the Bay. As the boat cruises through the limestone karsts and clear waters in the afternoon, several options are available. On board kayaks are available for rental for those wishing to go out for a paddle or take a dive into the clear waters from the boat's own platform. For those seeking a more culinary experience, take part in a Vietnamese spring roll cooking demonstration on the sundeck. After the sun sets, enjoy a delicious international and Vietnamese buffet dinner. After dinner the award winning film " Indochine" starring Catherine Deneuve will be screened on the sundeck should you desire to watch a movie before retiring to your cabin for a good night's sleep.

Day 10 Cruising Halong Bay and Exploring Old Hanoi by Cyclo

On your return to Halong City enjoy a full breakfast as your boat weaves its way back to the dock. Upon disembarkation your guide will meet you for the transfer back to Hanoi. You arrive back in Hanoi in time for lunch . In the afternoon enjoy a tour by cyclo, a chauffeur-pedaled tricycle, through Hanoi's Old Quarter, also known as "36 streets". This bustling area of narrow streets and alleys is home to literally thousands of small businesses and shopkeepers. It's a great place to explore, especially by cyclo, with plenty of photo opportunities all around you. Tonight you will have a farewell dinner at the Green Tangerine.

Day 11 Return to USA

In the morning your guide will be waiting to take you to the airport for your flight back to the US. You " gain" the day you previously lost and arrive back the same afternoon.
