Michelangelo in Rome

  • During the Renaissance, Rome -- the 'city of the popes' -- was the celebrated meeting point for the best artists of the time. Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1506 to build a monumental tomb in St. Peter's. That work was never carried out and became, for Michelangelo, "the tragedy of my life." Today, from that incomplete project, only the celebrated statue of Moses remains. During those half-dozen years in Rome, Michelangelo toiled at what is unanimously acknowledged as one of the supreme masterpieces of all time, the incomparable Sistine Chapel. The tour starts in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, then moves to the dynamic Piazza del Campidoglio, one of the most beautiful urban spaces in Rome. It was redesigned by Michelangelo, along with the Cordonata, a gently rising ramp that leads down to the Campo Marzio. Here, in close proximity to the Pantheon, the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva reveals one of the most elegant unknown works by the artist: the Risen Christ. In nearby Piazza Farnese you can admire the stately palace built for Pope Paul III, now the French Embassy. This tour ends with Michelangelo's most famous masterpieces of all: the powerful, recently restored frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and the beautifully evocative Pieta' in St. Peter's Basilica.
