Day 1 Depart US

This evening we board our overnight flight to San Sebastian to begin our exploration of northern Spain.

Day 2 Welcome to San Sebastian

We arrive at San Sebastian airport where we are met by our driver who will take us to our hotel located on the beach promenade overlooking Concha Bay. The hotel was originally built in 1965 for the exile of Queen Isabella but was turned into a palace-hotel at the end of the 19th Century. We have a chance to relax or stroll the promenade before we are taken to a restaurant specializing in Basque cuisine.

Day 3 Exploring the Spanish/French Basque Coastline

The Basques are an ancient pre-indo-European race with their own language and culture. Although primarily in current day Spain, their historic roots cover what is now part of France. Today we will drive along the Basque Coast passing the Spanish town of Hondarribia before crossing the border near the French town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Our destination is the belle époque resort of Biarritz where aristocrats used to play and which still boasts superb hotels and an active casino. We have time to explore the town and have some lunch before returning to San Sebastian. This evening our host will take us to the old town of San Sebastian where we enjoy a variety of Tapas, regional wines and an exposure to Basque social life.

Day 4 Bilbao, the Guggenheim and the Cantabrian Coast

After breakfast you drive to the ancient port city of Basque country. The city was founded in the 14th Century and you will take time to explore the old town and the Gothic Cathedral. It is the Guggenheim Museum, opened in 1997, however, that now defines Bilbao. Designed by Frank Gehry and clad in Titanium it is a masterpiece in and of itself. You will have a private tour of the museum before adjourning for lunch. After lunch you head along the Cantabrian Coast to the well-preserved coastal town of Santillana del Mar with buildings dating from the 12th to the 18th Centuries. You have the opportunity to explore the town center before dinner.

Day 5 The Caves of Altamira and Picos de Europa

After breakfast we depart for the Caves of Altamira which are located near to our hotel. These caves contain cave drawings dating back 13,000 years but since access is restricted we will visit Neocuerva which is a replica of what the drawings look like. We then drive through the picturesque countryside of the Picos de Europa before stopping at a typical Asturian village where we visit a factory dedicated to the making of Cabrales Cheese and inside a natural cave where the cheese is aged. We will also visit and Apple Cider cellar with an old apple press and see the traditional way of making cider, the primary drink of Asturias. We will have lunch inside the cider cellar. After lunch we stop in the town of Covadonga to visit its Basilica before arriving in the town of Cangas de Onis where our hotel, dating back to the 12th Century, awaits.

Day 6 Aspects of Asturias and Galicia

Our first visit today will be to Oviedo the capital of the once independent principality of Asturias. We will spend the morning exploring this historic town including its outstanding 12th Century Gothic Cathedral. We will take time for lunch before setting off to visit the remains of the Celtic fort at Castro de Coana. We cross over into Galicia and, if the tide is   right visit the interesting rock formation on the beach of the cathedrals. We will end our day in picturesque town of Ribadeo overlooking the Eo River. After a chance to enjoy the delightful views from the hotel, dinner awaits.

Day 7 La Coruna and Santiago de Compostela

Our route today will take us further along the coastline to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. We will visit Lugo noted for having one of the finest surviving examples of Roman walls, before entering the town of La Coruna. This is one of the largest towns in the region and is rumored to have been originally established by the Phoenicians. In 1588, the Spanish Armada sailed for England from here and was soundly defeated by Sir        Francis Drake. Ironically, in 1809 a British Army had to evacuate from here after a defeat by Napoleon during the Peninsular War. After taking time for lunch and a visit to the Tower of Hercules and the Castle Museum of Saint Anton, we resume our journey to Santiago. This evening we enjoy dinner at a Michelin starred restaurant.

Day 8 A Walking Tour of the Pilgrimage City

During the Middle Ages, the to tomb of St. James was regarded as one of the most holy sites in Christendom and thousands of pilgrims traveled through Spain each year, starting in Navarre, to visit the shrine. While the devotion has dropped off, it is still a major source for religious visitors from July 25th through the beginning of August. We will walk this beautiful time taking time to visit the Museum of the Galician people, Plaza de Abastos Market and the Cathedral. We will walk the old quarter where we enjoy some Tapas and wine. A leisurely afternoon prepares us for the “Galician Goodbye Dinner” with wine at our hotel.

Day 9 Return to USA

After breakfast our driver will take us to the airport for the flight back to the US.
