Day 2 Welcome to Budapest

Upon arrival and after clearing customs you will be met by your guide and taken to your waiting car. Although we will explore the city in more detail, this morning you will get an orientation tour of the key parts of the city. You will stop for lunch and begin to become at home with this most charming of European cities. You are then taken to your deluxe hotel where you have a chance to relax and freshen up. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Day 3 Buda, Pest and the Gypsies of Marvabymenyasszony

After a good night's rest you are ready to meet your guide for a personalized exploration of both parts of the city, divided by the Danube but connected by nine bridges the oldest being the Szechenyi Chain Bridge built in 1849. You start your visit on the Buda side beginning with the Castle district and a visit to Matthias church, Budapest's most famous church and dating back to the 13th Century. You will then visit the Fisherman's Bastion, a neo-Romanesque edifice with seven towers built on the medieval walls and offering spectacular views of the city. The views continue as you travel to Gellert Hill where you enjoy lunch. In the afternoon you explore Pest including Heroes' Square, Vajdahunyad Castle, Andrassy Street, the Opera House, St. Stephen's Basilica and the Parliament building before returning to the hotel. This evening we are pleased to host you at the Marvabymenyasszony Restaurant where you will enjoy a dinner with wine, gypsy music and a folklore show.

Day 4 Esztergom and the Danube Bend

After breakfast you will leave the city for an excursion to Danube Bend, considered one of Hungary's most beautiful regions. Your first stop will be Esztergom which is the center of the Catholic Church in Hungary. You will have a chance to visit the Basilica before moving on to Visegrad once a royal seat where you can enjoy some of the most beautiful panoramas in the country. After lunch at a local restaurant you drive to Szentendre a picturesque baroque town noted for its winding streets. The town is noted for its artists and the many museums including the Kovacs Margit Ceramics museum which you will visit before returning to Budapest.

Day 5 Bull’s Blood and the Valley of the Beautiful Ladies

Today your guide will be ready to take you away from Budapest and into the Hungarian heartland The first stop on the circuit will be the town of Eger which is surrounded by hills covered with wines from whence comes the famous " Bull's Blood" red wine. Eger is also one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary with a Turkish past due to the Ottoman invasion and a more recent baroque era under the Hapsburgs. While in town you will visit the needle-like Minaret remaining from Turkish times, the Basilica and the Lyceum Episcopal with its library and chapel. This evening you will be taken to an area known as the " Valley of the Beautiful Ladies" where you will be our guest at an event known as the " Election of the Wine General" during your three course meal you will be introduced to five different wines of the region and expand your knowledge of Hungarian wines. You will then be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 6 Home of the Lipizzaner

After you have enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, your guide will be waiting to take you to the town of Szilvasvarad. While people associate the famous Lipizzaner stallions with the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, they are actually bred here. For many years Austria and Hungary were part of the same empire led by the Hapsburgs so it was natural for things to be connected. While here you will see the horses, visit the Lippizan museum and stables and take a carriage ride. You will then take a ride on a narrow gauge railroad through the Szalajka Valley. Lunch today will be a picnic in a field where fresh trout is grilled and enjoyed along with local white wine. After lunch you depart for the town of Debrecen which is Hungary's second most populous city. Dinner is at your hotel this evening.

Day 7 Discovering the Puszta

Debrecen is called "Calvinist Rome" because of the central role it played in the Hungarian Reformation in the 16th Century. During your visit you will see the Great Calvinist Church, the Calvinist College and the Town Hall, all built in the classic style. To be ecumenical you will also visit the Synagogue, Greek Orthodox Church and the Basilica of St. Anne as well as the largest windmill in Central Europe. You will then depart the city for the Hortobagy Puszta, the most well known part of the Great Hungarian Plain (known as the Puszta). This national park allows you to become acquainted with the region's flora and fauna. First, however you have lunch with wine at a typical csarda restaurant accompanied by gypsy music. After lunch you will visit the Museum of the Shepherd where you enjoy a carriage ride, a thrilling equestrian show and have a chance to view some of the unusual and indigenous animals including long-horned Hungarian Grey cattle, stud horses, spiral horned Racka sheep and buffalo herds. Prior to departure you are offered pogacsa a traditional Hungarian pastry and apricot brandy to wash it down. Your guide will then take you to your hotel in Kecskemet.

Day 8 Kecskemet and Szeged

In the morning you will have a personally guided tour of the city including the town hall, built in the art nouveau style the Cifra Palace and the music academy of Ferenc Liszt. You will then be taken by your guide to the city of Szeged which is situated where the Tisza and Maros Rivers converge. You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before beginning your exploration of Szeged. You will visit the Dome Square with its array of famous buildings including the Bishop's Palace, the Theological College and the University. You will then check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner in your hotel.

Day 9 Discoveries in Pecs

After breakfast, you will depart for Pecs where you arrive about lunch time. After lunch in a local restaurant your guide will take you on an intimate and informative tour including Kossuth Square, the Mosque of Pasha Ghazi Kassim and the Mosque of Yakovali Hassan with its minaret. Next you will visit St Peter's Cathedral and the Famous Museum of Zsolnay Porcelain before finishing your day at the ancient Roman burial chambers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 10 The “Hungarian Sea” and the Wines of Meszaros

Your guide will be waiting to take you to Lake Balaton which is the largest lake in Central Europe often referred to as the Hungarian Sea since Hungary has no access to a port. Arriving at Lake Balaton you board a ferry boat to Tihany Peninsula, one of the Lake's most scenic and historic areas. Upon arrival and following lunch you will visit the Benedictine Abbey where you can find the royal document prescribing the foundation of the church. You will then travel to Pecsely where you visit the Meszaros Wine Cellar and taste their wines. You then proceed to Balatonfured and your hotel. Tonight you have dinner with wine at a local restaurant.

Day 11 Castle Festetics and Sopron

After breakfast you will drive to Kesthely where a knowledgeable local guide will take you on a personal tour of Castle Festetics, a 101 room tribute to the Baroque and reminiscent of the great French Chateaux. After a detailed tour you will join your regular guide to the town of Nagycenk where you take lunch at the Castle Hotel Szecheny. After lunch you proceed to the town of Sopron where you visit the Storno-House before settling into your hotel.

Day 12 Castle Esterhazy, Gyor and a Danube Dinner Cruise

From Sopron you drive to Castle Esterhazy where you are introduced to another local guide who will take you on a tour of Castle Esterhazy which was until early in the last century the homes of the Princes of Esterhazy known for their support of the arts. It was here that the composer Joseph Haydn was both sponsored and performed and the Castle still puts on musical recitals with ideal acoustics. More a palace than a castle, the exterior spiral staircase leading from the main ballroom to the courtyard is a must see. After your visit you will continue on to the scenic town of Gyor which is equidistant between Vienna and Budapest and thus grew to prominence in the Hapsburg era. You have lunch in Gyor before returning to Budapest and your hotel. This evening, be our guest on a dinner cruise on the Danube.

Day 13 A Table at Gundel’s

After breakfast you have the day at leisure to walk the sights and shops near your centrally located hotel. Lunch is at the hotel but save room for tonight's farewell event. In the evening you will be taken to Gundel's the world famous restaurant located in a park setting. In the early 20th Century it was considered one of the finest restaurants in the world but fell on sadder days under soviet rule. After emancipation, the property was bought by George Lang, a Hungarian by birth and owner of Café des Artistes in New York. He restored both the building and its cuisine to its former level which you now have the chance to enjoy. Your four course meal is accompanied by Champagne and white and red wine as you toast your visit to Hungary.

Day 14 Return to USA

Your guide will be waiting to take you to the airport and assist in your check in. Your flight arrives back in the USA later the same day.
