Your Tour

Personal Highlights:

  • A private boat cruise through Abel Tasman National Park
  • Tasting the Marlborough Wine Region
  • Observing life on a working sheep and deer breeding farm
  • Private helicopter rides over the glaciers
Day 1 Depart USA

You board your overnight flight headed for New Zealand to begin your discovery of the scenic wonders of the South Island.

Day 2 En route

Although your flight takes a little over twelve hours, you will cross the International Date Line technically "losing" a day but you will regain that day upon your return.

Day 3 Arrive in Auckland and Continue to Nelson

You will arrive in the morning in Auckland which is the capital of New Zealand and located on New Zealand's North Island. After completing arrival formalities you will be met by your driver and taken from the International to the domestic airport for the brief flight to Nelson on South Island. Nelson is known as the city of sunshine, a haven for artisans seeking a lifestyle amid a landscape of mountains, valleys, unspoilt shores and National Parks. You will be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your base for the next two nights. Eden House is not your usual hotel since it is a private home that takes no more than six guests. This gracious home is situated on 48 acres of private grounds and is furnished to a very high standard. You have a chance to relax before enjoying dinner accompanied by some local award winning wines.

Day 4 Kaiteriteri Beach and Abel Tasman National Park.

Following a leisurely breakfast, perhaps outside in the garden, you are ready to meet your driver for the scenic drive to Kaiteriteri Beach facing the Cook Strait which separates the South and North Islands. Here you will board a private boat for a cruise along the shore of Abel Tasman National Park one of New Zealand's loveliest stretches of coastline. You will stay close to shore enabling you spectacular views of the many sandy coves and other scenic highlights. There is no set itinerary and you are free to go ashore at any point that interests you and that might include Split Apple Rock, Watering Cove, Shag Harbour, Wharf Rock, Cottage Loaf or the rugged beauty of the Awaroa Heads. Lunch is enjoyed along the way. In the early afternoon you will be taken back to the hotel for some further relaxation before another superb dinner with wine.

Day 5 Blenheim and the Marlborough Wine Region

You say goodbye to Eden House and start a leisurely drive to Blenheim, heart of the Marlborough wine region. You will first stop Timara Lodge where you will check in. Timara lodge is set among 600 acres pf which 350 are under vine. It also has a five acre man-made lake and a twenty five acre formal English Garden, all for a maximum of eight guests. After checking in, you depart for a light lunch and a visit to some of the local renowned vineyards. You can discuss with your driver but we recommend considering a visit to Cloudy Bay, Hunters Wines, Daniel Le Brun, Seresin and Allan Scott Wines. After your exploration of the vineyards you return to Timara for some relaxation. Perhaps a walk around the lake, a dip in the pool or a stroll through the gardens. A pre-dinner drink allows you to review the day before enjoying an excellent meal with selections from the Timara cellar.

Day 6 From Blenheim to Waipara

This morning you have three options available to you. First you can relax at the Lodge enjoying its natural beauty, enjoying a swim or a game of tennis. As an alternative you can go riding in the high country savoring the breathtaking vistas. A third option is to take a tour though Blenheim's gourmet food emporiums and boutique breweries. No matter which option you choose, in the afternoon you will depart for Waipara and Claremont House an 1866 homestead for a 1,600 acre working farm breeding mainly sheep and deer. Upon arriving at Waipara you have the chance to unwind with a pre-dinner drink before enjoying the farm's bounty accompanied by the appropriate wines.

Day 7 Experiencing New Zealand Farm Life

Today you will have the chance to get a privately guided tour of a working farm. With 400 breeding hinds and 2,500 breeding ewes this is a serious commercial enterprise that just happens to be set on the spectacular Waipara gorge. In addition to the farm operation you also get to see " Bishop's Head" rock a huge natural sculpture which can only be viewed from Claremont. After a stimulating day you return to elegance, pre-dinner drinks and another fabulous meal with wine.

Day 8 Christchurch and the “little hill among the hills”

You depart from Waipara for the brief but scenic ride to Tai Tapu and the Otahuna Lodge which, translated means little hill among the hills. Ideally situated between the Southern Alps and the coast, it also offers proximity to the "Garden City of New Zealand", Christchurch. After checking in to one of the seven generous suites, your driver will be at the ready to take you into Christchurch where the rest of the day is at your discretion. The city is the most "English" of cities and easy to get around. We suggest that you take a trip aboard a historic tram, stroll through Hagley Park, visit the Cathedral or take a punt ride on the Avon River. Very civilized; very English. At an agreed upon time and place, your driver will pick you up and deliver you back to Otahuna where cocktails, dinner and fine wine await.

Day 9 A Little Taste of France

Since you were very English in Christchurch we give you a little slice of France. Your driver will take you to the quaint colonial coastal town of Akaroa which was settled by French pioneers. Your day will start with a boat ride to view the Hectors Dolphins, the world's smallest Dolphins and unique to this area. You then have lunch at a waterfront restaurant before meeting a local guide who will take you on a walking tour of the old town. After the tour your return to Otahuna Lodge.

Day 10 The Home of the Alpine Parrot

After breakfast, you meet your driver for the trip to the airport and the short flight to Queenstown, the "Adventure Capital of the World". Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel which is located on the shore of Lake Wanaka. Whare Kea (pronounced ‘far-eh-kee-ah') means ‘house of the kea' and is located on 60 acres of private farmland but accepts only twelve guests. The Kea, the world's only alpine parrot, lives high above the snowline in the surrounding mountains. You spend the remainder of the day admiring the peaks of the Southern Alps both in realty and as a reflection in the Lake. Pre-dinner cocktails signal another fine meal on tap.

Day 11 Jet Boats, Glaciers and a “Lord of the Rings” Experience

Today you will join a small group of fellow eco-adventurers for an excursion by jet boat on the Matukituki River with spectacular views of Mount Aspiring and Avalanche Glacier. You will travel past movie locations from "Lord of the Rings" on this exciting program combining jet boating with culture, nature and history. At the top of the river you will be met by helicopter for a flight to the second largest glacial area in New Zealand. You make a high altitude landing on the glacier before returning to the jet boat for the journey back to Wanaka.

Day 12 The Gem of Queenstown

This morning you transfer to Queenstown, set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu amidst the towering peaks of the Southern Alps. Your destination is Eichardt's Private Hotel, a Queenstown waterfront icon for more than 130 years. Totally updated and refined in 2001 it is the centerpiece of the Queenstown café and shopping scene. After checking in to your suite, you have lunch at the hotel before having the rest of the day to explore the nearby shops and restaurants.

Day 13 A Fitting Finale

After breakfast, you start your day with drive to the airport where you board a helicopter for a flight to Milford Sound. As you fly towards the glacier you fly through the grandeur of the Alps, over rainforests, frozen lakes and majestic Milford Sound before touching down on an age old glacier. The views of the glaciers are overwhelming, with their many crevasses and blue and green ice falls. You will then return to Queenstown with views of New Zealand's southern lakes en route. The rest of the day is free for more sightseeing or shopping in Queenstown. This evening, after a pre-dinner drink in the hotel's house bar, you are invited to have a farewell dinner with wine at a nearby restaurant with our compliments.

Day 14 Return to the USA

You have the morning to relax before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Auckland connecting with your overnight flight back to the US. Picking up your "lost" day, you actually arrive back in the US the afternoon of the same day.
