Day 1 Depart USA

This evening we board our overnight flight to Lisbon to begin our exploration of the highlights of Portugal.

Day 2 Welcome to Lisbon

We arrive in Lisbon and, after completing customs, we are met by our driver who will take us on an orientation tour of the city, including the monumental quarter of Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem tower and the monument of the Discoveries. We drive along the river Tagus towards the center of town and we are dropped off near the Alfama, the most ancient quarter of Lisbon where we have lunch. After lunch, our host takes us on a walking tour of the Alfama before driving us to our hotel which was a Palace built in 1904 for the Marquis de Valle.  We have left this evening open to give you the choice of retiring early or, if you have gotten you second wind, not far away is the fashionable area known as “Docas” which has many fine restaurants with open air dining on the banks of the River Tagus.

Day 3 Sintra, Cascais and Estoril

After breakfast, our driver will be waiting to take us on a discovery of Lisbon’s surrounding areas. We start with a visit to Sintra where high atop a hill stands the fairytale National Palace with its huge painted rooms, each individually named and a huge pair of conical chimneys. We will take time to explore the interior of the palace including the Swans’ Room, the Room of the Sirens and the Magpie Room.  After leaving the castle we take some time to walk the quaint streets of Sintra with there antique and handicraft shops before stopping for lunch. After lunch we may want to pick up a delicious tart called “queijadas” to tide us over in the afternoon. We then head to the Colares wine region noted for its “sand wines” because of the sandy soil. Due to             development much of the land has been converted to other uses so this wine is becoming rare and expensive. We drive to Cabo da Roca to stand at the westernmost point in Continental Europe before heading to the charming fishing village turned resort of Cascais. We take time to walk the streets down to the harbor before heading back to Lisbon and passing through the resort town of Estoril famous for its casino. This evening we enjoy dinner and Fado, the music of Portugal.

Day 4 Mafra, Obidos, Nazare and Coimbra

This morning we head north to the university town of Coimbra but making some interesting stops along the way. Our first stop will be the seaside town of Mafra once a royal hunting preserve and still an area with a lot of wild game. On the coast is a combination monastery and Baroque Palace built by the king of Portugal from monies generated by the Portuguese colony of Brazil. We will stop to visit the Palace before heading to the charming medieval town of Obidos where we have the opportunity to visit the cloisters at the Monastery of Batalha. After our visit we will stop at the quaint fishing village of Nazare where we have set up some free time for lunch and walking the village. After lunch we head to Coimbra, a major university town. We arrive at our hotel which once served as accommodations for the Duke of Wellington in his campaign to drive Napoleon from both Portugal and Spain.

Day 5 Coimbra Conimbriga and Porto

After breakfast we will take a walk though the University area including the 18th Century library. The university was founded in 1290 AD and is one of the oldest in Europe. The city was the capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1256 and, in total, six kings reigned from here. After visiting other sights in the city , our driver will take us to the ancient town of Conimbriga which, in the time of Caesar Augustus, a major Roman town we will inspect the artifacts recovered from the diggings before heading to the second city in Portugal, Porto. Our hotel is located in the historic district near the Douro River Waterfront.

Day 6 Exploring Porto and Tasting Port

Today we have a full day exploration of Porto starting with an overview of the city including the Stock exchange Palace, the Cathedral a panoramic drive through the Praca de Batalha, Avenida dos Aliados and Clerigos Tower. We will then proceed on foot to the Ribeira section of town by the river Douro where we spend some time on a tour of the Taylor-Fladgate Company which has been selling Port Wine for over four hundred years.    Like the majority of the shippers and growers, they are originally English with names like Warre’s, Dow’s Croft’s, Sandeman’s. The English are, in fact the largest consumers of  Port an there is a club in Porto called The Feitoria Inglesa which is, even up until today, a club open only the English shippers of Port. We will see how the Port is created and taste both a light, white port and a dark red Port before having lunch at the Bareo de Fladgate,  a restaurant run by Taylor’s and offering excellent views of Porto.

Day 7 Amarante, Vila Real and Mesao Frio

We leave Porto in the morning and head east. Our first stop is the town of Amarante situated on the banks of the Tamega River. The town was established in 360 BC and prospered under the Romans. We will visit the monastery of Saint Goncalo who was born here and is buried in the monastery. We will also take a look at the town’s main bridge built in 1790 and scene of heroic resistance when the people of the town held off Napoleon’s forces for over two weeks before eventually succumbing to the superior forces. Our next stop is the town of Vila Real where we have the chance to have some lunch. After lunch we will visit the Solar de Mateus one of the best known manor houses in Portugal and whose likeness graces every bottle of Mateus Rose wine. Our final destination for today is Mesao Frio one of the most charming villages in the region and noted for its impressive main street lined with old lime trees and stately 18th Century manor houses. Our hotel for this evening is itself a stately manor house, privately owned and situated in its own 80 acre vineyard.

Day 8 Portalegre, Evora and the Alentejo

In the morning we will head south to Evora, the capital of the Alentejo region. We will stop for a leisurely lunch in the town of Portalegre arriving in Evora in the late afternoon. With its Roman, Moorish and Portuguese influences, Evora well deserves its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands out quite distinctly on the vast horizon of the Alentejo plain, on top of a gentle hill, dominated by its imposing cathedral. We spend some time walking the city before enjoying dinner at our hotel.

Day 9 Through the Alentejo to the Algarve

The Alentejo region of Portugal stretches from the Tagus River in Lisbon to the coast of the Algarve. Since most tourists tend to go directly to the Algarve or from Lisbon by plane to the Algarve it is relatively undiscovered by visitors particularly those from North America. It is a beautiful land, however with its terracotta earth covered in wheat fields and bordered by rows of olive trees marching up and down the hills like Roman   Centurions. Here and there, white washed villages and towns appear crowned by castles. The Romans left their aqueducts, the Portuguese a wealth of architecture from Gothic to the Baroque. This is the land in which we travel today stopping for a chance for some lunch before arriving at our resort located in the foothills of the Algarve.

Day 10 A day in the Algarve

We have a chance to relax at this intimate resort with its own botanical garden. The owner is an Englishman who has worked at Claridge’s and the Savoy so we can be sure that the cuisine will match the scenery. This will be a relaxing day and a perfect end to our trip through Portugal.

Day 11 Return to USA

After breakfast our driver will be waiting to take us to the airport for our return flight to the US.
