You will then proceed to your hotel in the Golden triangle which is the area where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. Your hotel has an excellent spa so you may want to try another massage before enjoying dinner

Day 5 Houey Xay and a Leisurely Mekong River Cruise

You rise early to depart Chiang Rai and cross into Laos at Houey Xay. After immigration, your lao guide will meet you and will be with you for your entire stay in Laos. You will board your private boat which will, over the next two days take you Luang Prabang passing delightful scenery on the way. Your first stop today will be to visit a hill tribe village where a stroll around the village will give you a firsthand look at the traditional rural life of these people. Lunch is served on board as you continue your cruise. In the afternoon you arrive at Pakbeng where you are transferred to your Lodge located on a hill. From your balcony you get attractive views of the Mekong especially as the sun begins to set. You then enjoy dinner with similar views of the Mekong.

Day 6 Ban Baw and the Pak Ou Caves

If you are an early riser, you have the opportunity to visit the morning market where residents of the nearby villages and hill tribes gather to buy and exchange their goods. We highly recommend it versus a leisurely breakfast. Either way, your boat will be ready to sail at 8:30AM for the second and final part of your river journey. Your first stop will be at Ban Baw village to observe the distillation of Lao-Lao, a traditional alcoholic drink made from rice. After a Lao-Lao "aperitif" you re-board the ship where lunch is again served while you cruise. After lunch you will dock to visit the Pak Ou Caves, known locally as Tam Ting, which contain thousands of lacquered Buddha statues displayed in two caves carved out of a towering limestone cliff. The statues range in size from a few inches to human size. Looking out from the caves offers a sweeping vista of the convergence of the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers. After your visit you continue your cruise arriving in Luang Prabang before sunset. A car will be waiting and your guide will assist you in checking into you hotel.

Day 7 Historical, Cultural and Culinary Luang Prabang

Today your guide will take you on a full day tour of this UNESCO World Heritage site. You will start with a visit to Wat Visoun the holiest temple of the city. In the courtyard stands the Watermelon Stupa so named because that is what it is shaped like,. You will also visit Wat Aham, built in the 1500's and also Wat That where the ashes of King Sisavang Vong are kept inside the large central stupa. Next you will enjoy a traditional pun pa lunch at the Tamarind Restaurant. A whole fish marinated in local herbs and stuffed with lemongrass is cooked over a grill wrapped in Banana leaves. It is served with fresh vegatables, herbs, noodles and sauce and your guide will demonstrate the Lao custom of wrapping the fresh ingredients into a leafy parcel and eating with your fingers. Your guide will then take you to the Old town of central Luang Prabang where you can walk through the rows of stalls looking at what is on sale. The locals come here every day to shop for vegetables, fruits and other specialties. Next to the market is the National Museum which was formerly the Royal Palace. You have a privately guided visit examining the art, artifacts and jewels in display. Next you climb the steps to the top of Phou Si Hill located in the centre of town and offering panoramic views of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, the neighboring mountains and the town. Descend the steps on the other side of the hill and stroll to the nearby night market. Every evening along the main street, the area's ethnic minorities gather to sell their handicrafts and the soft lights of the stalls create a magical market setting. This evening enjoy dining at L'Elephant, one of the city's best restaurants.

Day 8 Saffron Robes and Turquoise Waters

If you are an early riser you can experience a very special dawn visit to watch the monks collecting their alms. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of saffron-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents, a beautiful, serene ceremony which again highlights the spirituality of the Lao people. You will then leave the city by car for a relaxing visit to Kuangsi Waterfalls which are located about twenty miles outside the city. The falls cascade down a multilevel limestone formation creating a series of turquoise blue pools perfect for swimming in on a hot day. The surrounding jungle and dense woods surrounding the falls are filled with wildlife and footpaths allow scenic walks. You will have a picnic lunch at the falls before returning to the city where you have some time to relax. Dinner is at Couleur Café this evening.

Day 9 The Scenic Journey to Vang Vieng

After breakfast your guide will be waiting along with your car and driver to take you on a scenic trip to the town of Vang Vieng. As you head south through the countryside you stop for a visit to the caves of Tam Jam, Chang and Poukham. You arrive in Vang Vieng, a small town set upon the banks of the Nam song River and surrounded by limestone karsts filled with caves. Your guide will take you around the town and out in the countryside where you can see traditional Lao daily life with farmers working in the fields, women weaving traditional textiles and children playing in the river.

In the morning you drive to Nam Ngum Lake which was created in 1971 when a dam was built to provide electricity for nearby and a portion of nearby Thailand. This 100 square mile area is dotted with islands and surrounded by mountains. Local fishing is a major source of income for the locals and you will enjoy a lunch of freshly caught and grilled fish from the lake. You will then take a scenic cruise on the lake enjoying the mountains, forests and islands and the activities of the local fishermen. You continue on to Vientiane stopping along the way at a local market. This evening you will have dinner at Le Central, a French style bistro owned and managed by French expatriates.

Day 11 A Private Tour of Vientiane

This morning enjoy a tour of with your guide to discover the hidden charms of Vientiane, whose name means "the city of sandal wood". Vientiane is one of the quietest and most serene capitals in the world, far away from the bustle and hustle of other Asian capitals like Singapore or the real estate frenzy of cities like Shanghai. This is a livable, walkable city. Your tour starts at Wat Sisaket, the only temple left intact after the Siamese invasion in 1828. Continue on to Wat Phra Keo which displays works of art of both Lao and Khmer origin. You will also see the Presidential Palace, you cannot enter but it does give you an idea of the town's colonial past since it was formerly the French Governor's palace. The food is delicious, made from fresh ingredients and prepared in a kitchen which meets the highest international standards of hygiene. After lunch you will visit That Luang, the holiest site in Laos. Constructed by King Setthethirat on the 16th Century, the temple is resplendent as the sun shines on its golden spire. You have the chance to relax and then head for a coffee plantation for a visit. The beans grown in this region have become one of the most famous coffees in the world, and are sometimes called the "Champagne of Coffee". Lao coffee is cultivated almost exclusively in the cool fresh air of the Belovens Plateau by the families who live in its 250 villages. After your visit to the plantation you are transferred to your Lodge on Don Daeng Island. This evening we have arranged for you to be invited to and participant in a traditional baci ceremony. Day 14 The 4,000 Islands and the Irrawaddy Dolphins

Today you will travel to an area known as 4,000 islands, one of the jewels of the Mekong where the river widens to nine miles and has thousands of islands between the river banks. The water flows around the islands and forms rapids as it flows down to the Cambodian border. Upon arrival at Ban Nakasang you board a boat for the peaceful islands of Done Det and Done Khone located near the Cambodian border. The islands played an important role during the French Colonial rule as they linked Laos to Cambodia and South Vietnam. To bypass the waterfalls a railway and a bridge were built and the bridge still remains. Try and keep an eye out for Irrawaddy Dolphins which the locals believe to be the reincarnation of humans. After lunch, stroll through the palm-fringed villages to the Khone Papheng waterfalls. This area is the only part of the 2,700 mile Mekong River not navigable by boat. You return to your lodge where you can take a swim or opt for a massage at the spa.

Day 15 The Country Life of Laos
