Day 3 Art Treasures of the Vatican

Early in the morning, your driver will be waiting to take you to the smallest state in the world, the Vatican. You will follow the walls surrounding the Vatican until you arrive at the main entrance. Here you will meet your Vatican guide whose expertise will, initially, explain the secrets behind the creation of Michelangelo's masterpiece the Sistine Chapel. You will also visit the Painting Gallery and the Raffaello Rooms where you will see his masterpiece "The School of Athens". Your guide will then take you into the Basilica of St. Peter's, the largest church in the world, where you will span four centuries of history and art including Bernini's Baldacchino and Michelangelo's Pieta. After your exploration of the Vatican your driver will take you to a restaurant where you have lunch. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure and you may wish to use this time to visit the Capitoline Museum which houses works of art that tell the full history of Rome. This evening you enjoy dinner at  one of our favorite Trattorias where you will enjoy good food, good wine and the good people of Rome.

Day 4 Piazzas e Fontanas di Roma

Not all art is in the museums of Rome, much of it is part if the city of Rome in its squares (piazzas) and fountains (fontanas). Your expert guide will take you to a selection of these piazzas and fontanas, many of which were the work of one man, Bernini. You will visit the Piazza Navona which still retains the shape of the Roman Stadium which previously filled this spot. Here you will see the Fontana dei Fiumi with four giants at its base representing four rivers, the Ganges, the Danube, the Nile and Rio della Plata. You visit the Piazza Barberini and the Fontana del Tritone, the Fontana della Barcaccia in the Piazza di Spagna and, of course, the Fontana di Trevi this most famous Baroque construction that took thirty years to complete. Readers of "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown will recognize these fountains from the book. After lunch, the rest of the day is left open for you to do some shopping or enjoy some of Rome's other historic sights.

You will visit the Piazza del Duomo and learn the history of the dome created by Brunelleschi and the nearby bell tower by Giotto. A visit to the Ponte Vecchio will be followed by a tour of Franciscan Santa Croce church and its masterpieces by Giotto, Donatello and Brunelleschi. Within its walls are the burial sites of the Renaissance greats, Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. Dante is also honored but his sarcophagus is empty. A more recent addition is the great composer Rossini. You complete your tour in the Piazza della Signoria, one of the most beautiful squares in the world. After lunch you will go to the Pitti Palace, built for the Pitti family in 1458. It was bought by Eleonora di Toledo wife of Cosimo I (a Medici) in 1549 and the Florentine Court was moved there in 1560. The hillside stretching out from the palace was made into a beautifully elegant garden which has become a fine example of an Italian terraced garden dotted with terraces, fountains and statues. While the gardens are alluring, it is the Palatine Gallery located inside the Palace that will absorb most of your time. Housed within is one of the richest art galleries in the world with an outstanding collection of 16th, 17th and 18th Century masterpieces including works by Raphael and Titian. This evening you have a chance tp try true Tuscan cuisine at a restaurant close to your hotel.

Day 8 David and Other Wonders of the Florentine Renaissance

Your day starts with a private tour of the Uffizi, designed by Vasari as an administrative office for the Medici's, it was, in 1591, turned into an art gallery to make available to the public the great works of art acquired or commissioned by the Medici family. It is a treasure trove of Renaissance art including notable works by DaVinci, Giotto, Michelangelo, Botticelli and Raffaello and after viewing and studying the art you take a coffee break at the Loggia della Signoria which offers superb views of the Palazzo Vecchio where the Medicis would sit and listen to music. After lunch you visit the Accademia Gallery famous for its collection of sculptures by Michelangelo. In addition to the world-renowned "David", you will also see the four "slaves" created for Pope Julius II and the "Pieta di Palestrina" It is "David" however which is close to the hearts of the citizens of Florence since, as the young hero who ia about to defeat the giant Goliath, it symbolizes the determination of the Florentine Republic to defend its freedom no matter the size of the adversary. This evening is left open.

Day 9 A Captivating Day in Florence

We have left this day open for you to explore on your own. Whether it is shopping for fine leather gods or marbleized paper, or spending more time at the Uffizi, the choice is yours. You might think about heading out to the Tuscan countryside for some wine (Chianti is nearby) or decide on a lazy alfresco lunch in one of the city squares. In the evening you have your final dinnerl in Florence as the sun sets over the Arno.

After breakfast your guide meets you for the start of your walking tour in Venice. You will start in St. Mark's Square. Your first stop will be the Doges Palace where you will learn about the history, art and culture of the Venetian Republic. This former seat of government is richly decorated by some of the most important artists of the 16th Century and this is especially so in the Doge's private apartments which you will also visit. You cross the Bridge of Sighs to see the old prison of the republic before returning to St Mark's square where you enter Saint Mark's Church. This was originally the Doge's private chapel but is now the Venetian cathedral and is a rare example of Byzantine Art with its golden mosaics and the "Pala d'Oro" (Golden Altar), rich in enamels, precious stones and jewels. You next go to the Correr Museum which is located in the Napoleonic Wing of the Piazza San Marco. The museum has many fine exhibits including a large collection of sculptures by Canova. After lunch near St. Mark's square the rest of the afternoon is at leisure to allow you the chance to explore on your own. This evening we have selected an excellent restaurant within walking distance of the hotel.

Day 12 Ca’ Rezzonico and the Gallerie dell’Accademia

Although your hotel, built as a residence in the 16th Century contains many unique works of art, you  will venture out to another former palazzo. Your day begins as your guide arrives  and takes you to the vaporetto stop for the short trip on the Grand Canal. You cruise the canal viewing the many fine palazzos that made this THE address in Venice. You will be dropped off at Ca'Rezzonico, a beautiful baroque palace where you can view 18th Century paintings, frescoes, furniture and furnishings and see how a noble family lived at the time. Your next stop will be Frari Church, an interesting historical and artistic complex with the church itself having works by Bellini and Tiziano and an annex called Scuola Grande di San Rocco known to Venetians as "Tintoretto's Sistine Chapel". After a leisurely lunch you walk to the Gallerie dell'Accademia which was established by Piazzetta in 1750 and later run by Tiepolo. Inside is a large collection of Venetian art ranging from the 14th to the 18th Century. Your host will explain the art and how it ties into the history of the city. This evening has been left open for you to select from the many fine restaurants Venice has to offer.

Day 13 The Peggy Guggenheim Museum and a Gondola Serenade

Today you will expand your artistic horizons by spending the morning at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum; located in the Palazzo Venier Dai Leoni which was bought by the American heiress as her home in 1954. She was an avid collector and friend of many famous artists at the start of the 20th Century and, upon her death in 1979 the house was opened full time as a museum. The collection includes major works by Miro, Magritte, Boccioni, Picasso, Chagall, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Ernst and Dali. After lunch we have left the rest of the afternoon free for you to create "your" Venice memories. In the early evening, you will board a gondola for a trip through some of the back canals accompanied by a musician and a singer. It is a bit touristy but hearing Santa Lucia from the seat of a gondola makes Venice come alive. After your gondola ride you return to the hotel for a farewell dinner overlooking the Grand Canal and enhanced by a bottle of wine with our compliments

Day 14 Return to USA

After breakfast your guide picks you up for the boat ride to the mainland and the trip to airport where your return flight to the USA awaits. You will arrive back home later the same afternoon.
