Day 1 Depart USA

You board your overnight flight headed for Paris, your gateway to the scenic delights of the coastlines of Normandy and Brittany

Day 2 Welcome to France

Upon arrival in Paris you are met by your guide and driver as you take an orientation tour of Paris. Whether this is your first or fifteenth trip to Paris it is impossible not to be impressed as you see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, L'arc de Triomphe or the Champs Elysees and know that you are truly in Paris. After the tour, your guide takes you to your centrally-located hotel where you have the afternoon to relax or explore the neighborhood around your hotel. Dinner is at the hotel's superb restaurant this evening

Day 3 Caen and a Chateau in Normandy

You can sleep late this morning, have a leisurely breakfast and take time for a stroll on the Champs d'Elysees which is right by your hotel. In late morning, your drive is waiting to take you to the station where 1st Class seats have been reserved for the relatively short ride to the town of Caen, well known as a center of learning. Upon arrival you are met by your guide and taken to lunch before enjoying a walking and driving tour of the town. You then head to your hotel, an 18th Century Chateau set in its own park. You have views of the park setting as you enjoy dinner at the Chateau.

Day 4 Honfleur and the Birth of Impressionism

After breakfast your guide is waiting to take you on an exploration of some charming Normandy coastal towns. You will visit the quaint towns of Cabourg and Estretot which is known for its white cliffs not unlike the cliffs on the English side of the Channel in Dover. You then head to the picturesque fishing village of Honfleur known for its picturesque narrow houses overlooking the harbor where the Seine River meets the sea. It was from this port that Samuel de Champlain set forth across the Atlantic to Canada where, in 1608, he founded Quebec. The scenic views attracted artists and there was a thriving artist colony known as the "Honfleur School" that included Courbet, Boudin and Monet. Not surprisingly, this school evolved into the Impressionist school. You have lunch in Honfleur before driving the Normandy Corniche, a scenic coastal drive. You will stop in the chic resort of Deauville before returning to your hotel.

Day 5 The Beaches and Balloons of Normandy

This morning, your guide will be waiting to start the day focused on the D-Day landing beaches. You will get a guided tour of Arromanches harbor, Pointe du Hoc, site of the Army Ranger climb and Ronald Reagan's eloquent tribute and Omaha Beach. While the landing was successful, a visit to the American Cemetery shows the price of that success. On a less somber note, you head to the town of Bayeux where you see the famous tapestry created in the 11th Century to document and celebrate William the Conqueror's victory at the Battle of Hastings. After lunch you are taken to Chateau De Balleroy which was purchased by Malcolm Forbes in the 1970's and became the site of his balloon race invitational. It is also the home of the Museum of Ballooning which you will visit before returning to "your" chateau.

Day 6 The Normandy Peninsula and Mont St. Michel

Today you depart your Normandy Chateau as your guide takes you on an exploration of the Normandy Peninsula. You start by heading west along the English Channel coast; you pass Utah Beach one of the other major landing sites and the town of Cherbourg which, along with Le Havre was a major port for the great steamships leaving for America. At the tip of the Peninsula you head south along the coast of the Gulf of St. Malo before arriving at Mont. St. Michel, one of the most visited sites in France. Originally built as a monastery, the edifice is, at high tide, cut off from the surrounding land and becomes its own island. You will cross the causeway to wander the town leading up to the "Marvel" as the monastery is called, keeping an eye on the tide! After your visit you return to the mainland and the charming resort town of Dinard where your hotel is located right on the beach. This evening you have dinner overlooking the beach; outside if the weather is favorable.

Day 7 Dinard and Saint-Malo

Dinard is a medieval walled city, well preserved and an ideal walking town. Accompanied by your guide you will have a chance to wander the old town with its half-timbered buildings and winding streets. You can walk the ramparts of the town and, if you are up to it walk down the winding steps to the old harbor below. After your visit you will drive to the other side of the estuary to another walled city names Saint-Malo. This town was noted in the 17th and 18th Centuries as the base of the infamous Corsairs who preyed on English and Dutch shipping under authority from the French King much like the privateers in the Caribbean. This was also the base of the Newfoundland fishing fleet which crossed to the coast of Canada in search of cod and other fish. Much wealth was created and it shows in the city. Today it is a popular attraction both for the walled city itself and its coastal presence. After your visit you return to Dinard and the beach.

Day 8 Coastal Brittany

Today you will follow the coast around the Brittany peninsula. You will head west along the English Channel before reaching the tip of the Peninsula and heading east at the city of Brest. The water you now see to your right is no longer the English Channel but the Bay of Biscay. As you move down the coast your guide will introduce you to charming fishing ports along the coast since Brittany is known for its seafood. You stop for lunch along the way before arriving at the resort town of La Baule where your hotel awaits. Like your previous hotel, this property sits on the beach and offers outstanding views of the Bay.

Day 9 Relaxing in La Baule

Today we have left the day open for you to use the hotel as your base as you explore this beach resort. La Baule is noted for having the longest sand beach in Europe, almost eight miles in length and it is right outside your hotel. You may choose to spend the day walking the beach, taking a dip in the bay or walking along the promenade and enjoying the sea air.

Day 10 A Day in the Loire Valley

After breakfast you will start your journey inland. Fortunately, your journey inland takes you through one of the more scenic areas of France, the Loire Valley. Known for its impressive Chateaux and its wines, this area is a visitor's delight. During your drive you will have the opportunity to visit some Chateaux including Chateau de Chenonceau, Chateau d'Azay le Rideau or Chateau de Langeais. You will also have a chance to sample some of the local wine with lunch. At the end of the day you arrive at your hotel a 17th Century Manor House located in 350 acres of grounds. You have dinner with wine in the hotel's dining room.

Day 11 Chartres and Chateau D’Esclimont

After breakfast your guide is waiting to take you to the city of Chartres famous for its cathedral and especially the incredible stained glass windows dating from the middle ages. Upon arrival in Chartres, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the Cathedral and many of the quaint streets and alleyways that define the town. After lunch you head for your final hotel, Chateau d"Esclimont, which was originally built for the Archbishop of Tours in 1543 and since that time has been the home of aristocrats, statesmen, politicians and now you. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the Chateau's 150 acres. Boating on the lake is a suggested option. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner with wine in the Chateau's ornate and renowned restaurant.

Day 12 Return to USA

After breakfast, your driver will be waiting to take you to the airport for your return flight to the USA where you arrive back later the same afternoon.
