Day 1 Depart USA

This evening we board our overnight flight to Madrid to begin our wine exploration on the plains of Castile.

Day 2 Arrival in Spain

We arrive in Madrid and complete immigration procedures. Upon leaving customs, we are met by our driver and given an overview of Madrid’s scenic attractions including famous squares such as Plaza de Espana, de Oriente, Plaza Mayor Puerta del Sol and Plaza Castilla and well known avenues like Castellana and Gran Via. We will then be taken to our deluxe, centrally located hotel where we can rest or begin our exploration of Spain’s capitol city. Dinner, this evening, is at the hotel’s well regarded restaurant.

Day 3 Introduction to the Spanish Masters

Today our morning will be focused on the Royal Palace and the Prado Museum. The Royal Palace is the largest in Europe and was built by Philip V in the 18th Century. The building itself is an architectural treasure but inside is a rare and diverse collection of ceramics, tapestry and clocks. After the palace we visit the Prado, one of the most important art galleries in the world. Here are the Spanish masters including Goya, Velasquez, El Greco and Ribera. They are joined by Raphael, Rubens and Titian among others. This afternoon is left open to allow you some time for personal sightseeing or some shopping. Your guide can tell you the best shopping streets. This evening we will take you on a gastronomic exploration of Madrid as we visit three different establishments in old Madrid to partake of various pairings of wine and food.

Day 4 Toledo...City on a Hill

After breakfast we head south to Toledo which is the most visited town in Spain. More a museum than a town, this former Castilian capitol perches high on a granite hill overlooking the Tagus River. While in Toledo we will visit the Moorish bridge, an early synagogue, the gothic cathedral and the church of Santo Tome where you can see El Greco’s masterpiece “The burial of Lord Orgaz”. After lunch we will visit the Damascene craftsmen who embed precious stones in to metal to create spectacular jewelry. This evening is free to allow you to try one of Madrid’s numerous restaurants.

Day 5 Across the Plains of La Mancha

This morning we head Northwest through the plains of La Mancha. Although made famous by Don Quixote 400 years ago, the plains actually make up a large region previously known as Castile. Our first stop today will be in Medina Del Campo. This village was at one time the capital of Castile when Isabella 1st ruled. We will see the Palacio de las Duenas and the famous Castillo de la Mota before enjoying a Castilian lunch. We continue on to Ampudia and our hotel where we will enjoy Michelin starred cooking for dinner.

Day 6 The Reds of Toro and the Whites of Rueda

Today we will explore two wine areas the first noted for its superb reds. We will be heading Southwest close to the Portuguese border where we reach the appellation of Toro which gets its name from the Tinto de Toro which is a variation of the Tempranillo Grape. These wines are considered to be some of the boldest wines in Spain and we will have a chance to sample them at a couple of vineyards. We will head to the town of Zamora to admire its Romanesque architecture and to enjoy lunch in one of the excellent local restaurants. Although Castilla y Leon has a reputation for red wine, the area around Rueda has become known for its fine white wines based on the Verdejo grape. This has become Spain’s standard white wine in the last few years. We will visit some cellars to taste the wine and visit some vineyards before returning to our hotel.

Day 7 Burgos and the Wines of Ribera del Duero

The River Duero has acquired worldwide recognition among wine lovers because it flows into Portugal where it becomes the Douro carrying Port from Oporto to the sea. This morning our journey takes us to Pesquera de Duero and Nava de Roa in the heart of the region where Ribera de Duero is produced. Up until the 1970’s it seemed as if this area which was the home of Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most revered winery was destined to fade away due to lack of attention. But, thanks to the Tempranillo grape and some savvy winemakers this area now lays claim to some of the finest reds in Spain. We will have an opportunity to sample these wines at an afternoon tasting before continuing to Burgos. After lunch we will visit the Cathedral, the Monastery de Las Huelgas founded in 1187 by Alfonso VIII and where he is buried. Inside is a special museum displaying royal clothing from the 12th through the 15th centuries.

Day 8 Segovia and the passion of the Flamenco

After Breakfast we head south to Segovia where we take time to enjoy the city including the roman Aqueduct, the Cathedral and the famous Alcazar before heading to Madrid where we have the opportunity to get in some last minute shopping, On this, our last night in Spain we go to one of the finest Flamenco establishments in the city for a fine meal, good wine and excellent Flamenco.

Day 9 Retuirn to USA

After breakfast our driver will be waiting to take us to the airport for our return flight to the US.
