Day 1 Depart USA
You board your aircraft for the overnight flight to Thailand and its capital, Bangkok
Day 2 En Route
During your flight you will cross the International Date Line technically "losing" a day but you will regain it on your return flight.
Day 3 Welcome to Thailand
Arriving in Bangkok you will be met by our representative as you exit the plane. They will facilitate your expeditious move through customs and immigration and assist you with the retrieval of your luggage. Once in the arrivals hall you will be introduced to your personal guide and escorted out to your car where your driver is waiting. Arriving at your hotel, your guide will assist with check-in and coordinate the next day's agenda. You then are free to relax in your room with a delightful view over the Chao Phraya River. This evening enjoy a quiet dinner in the hotel and a good night's rest.
Day 4 The Tranquility of the Monks, the Bustle of the Night Market
You will have an early breakfast this morning so that your guide can get you to Wat Pho in time to experience the monks' early morning chanting ritual. After this uplifting and often private experience you have a chance to visit the Temple and its famous reclining Buddha stretching out over 140 feet. You will then continue to the Grand Palace, Thailand's most important landmark where you will be awed by the grandeur and majesty of the building and its throne halls. You then have the chance to be impressed by the mysterious Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand. After lunch you pick up a speedboat for an exhilarating ride along the Chao Phraya which was in times past the Grand Canal of the city. You will visit several interesting and historical sites in the Thonburi area before completing your day's activities by shopping in a local market. In the evening you will be taken to Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Bangkok's best and busiest night market where you enjoy an al fresco dinner at Joe Louis restaurant situated in the heart of the market.
Day 5 A Local’s Sightseeing Tour of Bangkok
After breakfast you will meet your guide in the lobby but the driver has the day off since you will be seeing the sights using all varieties of public transportation for only in this way will you truly experience Bangkok. You first take a public boat to Tha Phrachan pier where you disembark to visit "Amulet Market" adjacent to the pier and offering a wide range of religious amulets, charms, talismans and traditional medicines. After your visit, you have the choice or walking or taking a Tuk-Tuk which is a three wheeled covered vehicle powered by a motorcycle and carrying two passengers along with a driver. We recommend the Tuk-Tuk. You will cross the royal fields to Khao San Road which is the gathering spot for backpackers from around the globe. Continuing in your Tuk-Tuk you drive down Rachadamnoen which is the Thai Champs Elysees to the Sorndaeng Methavalai where you enjoy a delicious with a 1950's backdrop. After lunch you board a bus boat for Jim Thompson's House Museum dedicated the American who re-invented the Thai silk industry after WW II. After the visit you return to the hotels by boat. You have a chance to relax and freshen up before meeting your guide who will take you to "The Deck" where you will enjoy cocktails and dinner against the stunning backdrop of the Rattanakosin skyline. After dinner you can return to the hotel or take the opportunity to stroll along the flower market or the local night market along the banks of the river.
Day 6 A Day in the Countryside
This morning your guide, along with your driver, will be waiting to take you from the chaos of the capital city on a journey back in time. You start with a short train ride (always fun) to Chacherngsao, a little known but historical town east of the city. Your first visit will be to Wat Sothornwaram Worawiharn with its remarkable Italian marbled temple hall. You then board a boat for a cruise on the Bangprakong River with the first stop being the hundred year old market at Talaat Baan Mai. After exploring the market you visit Wat Leng Hok Lee a Chinese shrine festooned with paper mache sculptures. The next stop is Talaat Klong Suan, another 100 year old canal side market which will impress you with its simplicity and authenticity. You will have a chance to visit its old shops and stalls selling a variety of items including food, quaint old utensils and ancient tin toys. After lunch you return to the city. In the evening you will be picked up and taken to Chakrabongse Villa built a century ago and the former home of Prince Chula Chakrabongse. Built in traditional Thai style it is located in a lush tropical garden by the river. We have arranged for a special Thai dinner for you, served in an open air riverside pavilion where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Chao Praya River.
Day 7 Cooking and Shopping in Bangkok
In the morning you will meet with a chef/instructor from the Blue Elephant Restaurant. He or she will take you to the local market and teach you how to select and buy ingredients for your private cooking lesson, Once the ingredients have been purchased you head for the restaurant to work on the preparation of the Thai meal. Later, your efforts are rewarded as you enjoy the meal in the restaurant itself sampling your own cooking as well as other Thai dishes. After lunch, your guide and driver will pick you up and are at your disposal for an afternoon of shopping. Be sure to let your guide know if you are interested in visiting some of Bangkok's smart new shopping centers or if you are looking for traditional handicrafts, furnishings, tailors, gems or other items. This evening you have a choice of several restaurants where you can enjoy a private dinner.
Day 8 A Journey to Rangoon
After breakfast your guide will meet you and assist you with your transfer to the airport for your flight to Yangon also known as Rangoon. Upon arrival at the airport, your guide will meet you, your bags will be collected and you will be taken to your hotel for check-in. Your hotel was, at one time, the home of a regional Governor. After a chance to relax and get settled in, your guide will return to give you an overview of the city highlighted by the view of the magnificent sunset over the golden dome of the renowned Shwedagon Pagoda, a visit highlighted by transportation in a locally decorated authentic colonial coach. This evening enjoy an alfresco dinner in the delightful grounds of your hotel.
Day 9 Inle Lake and the Jumping Cats Monastery
In the morning your guide and driver will pick you up and take you to the airport for the flight to Heho. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and taken on a scenic ride to Nyaung Shwe which is the gateway village to Inle Lake. You transfer to a long tail motorized boat and taken to your resort situated on the shores of the lake. After lunch at the resort you will visit the Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery and its centuries-old Shan Buddha images. In English this translates to jumping cats but we will let your guide explain the name. On you return you have a chance to view the inhabitants of the lake communities as they row their boats using their feet instead of their hands. This evening enjoy dinner on the terrace of the hotel.
Day 10 Cultural Contrasts on Inle Lake
After breakfast you start your day by taking a boat to the local market which is visited by both local inhabitants and members of the surrounding hill tribes. The market moves between villages on a five day rotation so which village you go to will depend on the day. After a chance to look around and perhaps buy some souvenirs, you return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon switch cultures and enjoy the afternoon with a relaxing spa treatment to sooth your mind and body. Following your treatment and preceding dinner you will attend a wine tasting in the Resorts wine cellar, from markets to Merlot all in one day.
Day 11 Pagodas, Cigars and the Ancient Capitol
In the morning, you have the opportunity to visit the lake, Phaung Daw Oo pagoda. After visiting the pagoda you are taken to a cheroot factory where you see the making of typical Burmese cigars by hand. You will also visit the Inpawkhone weaving village before transferring to the airport for the flight to Burma's ancient capital and spiritual center, Bagan. Upon arrival you are met by your guide and taken to your hotel.
Day 12 Exploring Bagan
You will start your day by visiting Ananda Okkyaung, an architectural masterpiece and one of the few surviving brick monasteries from the early Bagan period. At the monastery you will board a horse drawn carriage for a leisurely tour among the many temples of this city culminating in a visit to Thatbyinnyu, the highest temple in Bagan and the colossal Dhammayangyi Temple celebrated for its remarkable brickwork and Sulamani. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to observe skilled craftsmen as they demonstrate to you the ancient technique of lacquering. As dusk approaches, you are taken to Nyaung U Village where you board a boat for a slow sunset cruise down the Irrawaddy River. This evening enjoy dinner and a puppet show at Nandar Restaurant.
Day 13 Bagan, Rangoon and Bangkok
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for the flight to Rangoon. Upon arrival you are met by your guide and taken to Bogyoke Market which for many years was known as Scott Market which is famed for its colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. You have a chance to tour the market with your guide before having lunch at La Planteur Restaurant considered one of Rangoon's best. After lunch you have a chance for further sightseeing before being taken to the airport for the flight to Bangkok. Upon arrival in Bangkok you are escorted by our representative to a hotel at the airport where you have dinner and spend the night.
Day 14 Return to USA
Since you are already at the airport, you have the chance to have a leisurely breakfast before meeting your guide who will assist you with the transfer to the airport and check-in. You regain the day lost previously arriving back the same afternoon.
