You arrive in Lisbon and, after completing customs, you are met by your guide who will take you on an orientation tour of the city, including the monumental quarter of Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem tower and the monument of the Discoveries. You drive along the river Tagus towards the center of town and are dropped off near the Alfama, the most ancient quarter of Lisbon where you have lunch. After lunch, your guide takes you on a walking tour of the Alfama before driving you to your hotel which was a Palace built in 1904 for the Marquis de Valle.  We have left this evening open to give you the choice of retiring early or, if you have gotten your second wind, not far away is the fashionable area known as “Docas” which has many fine restaurants with open air dining on the banks of the River Tagus.

Day 3 The Portuguese Riviera

After breakfast, your guide will be waiting to take you on a discovery of the surrounding area. you start with a visit to Sintra where high atop a hill stands the fairytale National Palace with its huge painted rooms, each individually named and a huge pair of conical chimneys. You will take time to explore the interior of the palace including the Swans' Room, the Room of the Sirens and the Magpie Room. After leaving the castle you take some time to walk the quaint streets of Sintra with their antique and handicraft shops before stopping for lunch. . You then head to the Colares wine region noted for its "sand wines" because of the sandy soil. Due to development much of the land has been converted to other uses so this wine is becoming rare and expensive. You drive to Cabo da Roca to stand at the westernmost point in Continental Europe before heading to the charming fishing village turned resort of Cascais. You take time to walk the streets down to the harbor before heading back to Lisbon and passing through the resort town of Estoril famous for its casino. This evening you enjoy dinner at tour hotel's acclaimed restaurant "Valle Flor" originally the grand ballroom of the palace.

Day 4 Evora and Estremoz

In the morning you will head south to Evora, the capital of the Alentejo region. With its Roman, Moorish and Portuguese influences, Evora well deserves its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands out quite distinctly on the vast horizon of the Alentejo plain, on top of a gentle hill, dominated by its imposing cathedral. You spend some time walking the city and having lunch before heading to Estremoz and your deluxe hotel. This former royal residence was built by King Dinis for his Queen, Isabel who would later be declared Saint Isabel. The room in which she died in 1336 is now a small chapel in her memory. Before dinner you have the opportunity to walk down to the lower town and enjoy the large market square.

Day 5 Journey to the High Country

Today you head north to the Serra de Estrela Mountain range. This is a vastly different Portugal; an area of pine forest, river valleys and natural lakes is the highest in the country in fact the only skiing facility in the country is located in this area. This is predominantly a sheep farming community and local fleeces are used to make a variety of woolen goods. Your pousada is situated at 3,000 feet on top of the mountain range and overlooking the Zezere River Valley and is built entirely from local stone. Even in summer the evenings are cool but all the better to enjoy the wood burning fireplace in the main hall.

Day 6 Viseu, Guimares and the Minho Wine Region

After breakfast you continue your northern journey on your way to the northern border with Spain. Your first stop will be in Viseu, formerly a Roman garrison town and now an architectural interesting center for this wine producing region. Of particular note is the Museo de Grao Vasco which houses the nature paintings of Vasco Fernandes, greatly influenced at the time by the Flemish school. You next head through the Minho region to the town of Guimaraes. The Minho region is home to Portugal's famous Vinhos Verdes or "green wine". This does not denote its color but rather the youthful freshness of these wines owing to the lack of ageing process. It is one of Portugal's favorite wines, especially with seafood. After lunch in the vineyard area you head to the town of Guimaraes. Designated as "the Cradle of the Nation", it is the birthplace of the first king of Portugal. Afonso Henriques and was the first capital. As befits a town of such historical importance, Guimaraes has a wealth of magnificent buildings which you view before heading to your pousada, a converted 17th Century Augustinian convent.

Day 7 Viana do Castelo and Monte de Santa Luzia

Today you head east, up close to the border with Spain. Your first stop will be in the town of Barcelos where you stop to view the making of the pottery. You then drive to Valenca an ancient walled town on the border of Spain and Portugal. Crossing the border you visit the Spanish towns of Vigo and Bayona where you have the opportunity to get lunch. You then head back down to Viano do Castelo an old sailing port. You have a chance to spend some time in the town before heading up the hill to your hotel which has views over the port and the river estuary and the long sweep of the sandy beaches of Cabedelo. In the foreground is the dome of the temple of Santa Luzia which caused National Geographic magazine to write that the view is "one of the world's finest panoramas perhaps only bettered by Rio de Janeiro".

Day 8 The Scenic Coastal Route to Porto

Your guide is waiting to take you on a scenic drive along the coast of Portugal. Today you will be heading south with the outstanding coastal scenery on your right. You will pass through charming towns such as Esposende, Ofir and Povoa and stop along the way for a light seafood lunch before arriving in Porto, Portugal's second largest city. Your hotel is located in the historic district near the Douro River Waterfront.

Day 9 Exploring Porto and Tasting Port

Today you have a full day exploration of Porto starting with an overview of the city including the Stock Exchange, Palace, the Cathedral, and a panoramic drive through the Praca de Batalha, Avenida dos Aliados and Clerigos Tower. You will then proceed on foot to the Ribeira section of town by the river Douro where you spend some time on a tour of the Taylor-Fladgate Company which has been selling Port Wine for over four hundred years. Like the majority of the shippers and growers, they are originally English with names like Warre's, Dow's Croft's, Sandeman's. The English are, in fact the largest consumers of Port and there is a club in Porto called The Feitoria Inglesa which is, even up until today, is open only the English shippers of Port. You will see how the Port is created and taste both a light, white port and a dark red Port before having lunch at the Bareo de Fladgate, a restaurant run by Taylor's and offering excellent views of Porto.

Day 10 A visit to Conimbriga and Coimbra

After breakfast you head for Conimbriga one of the best preserved Roman sites in Europe. Founded in 200 BC, the settlement consists of two main houses with magnificent mosaic floors together with several bathhouses and working fountains. There are also remains of an aqueduct and forum. After a tour, we head into the university town of Coimbra. The university was founded in the 13th Century and was, up until the early 20th Century the only University of Portugal. You will have the opportunity for lunch in town and then commence a tour of the university which is situated on the top of a hill. You will visit the baroque library with its rare books and the frescoes on the walls and the ceilings. You will also visit the 17th Century Convento de Santa Clara-a-Nova and the silver tomb of the patron saint of Coimbra, Queen Isabel. Tonight you have a performance of Fado which is associated with this city.

Day 11 A Day in Obidos

Today you drive to Obidos, a charming walled city dominated by an ancient castle. Starting with King Dinis in 1282, it has been traditional for the King to give this city to his wife upon their marriage. At the time of the first gift, the sea came up to the walls of the castle but by the 15th Century it had retreated about four miles so the land was turned to cultivation. You have left plenty of free time to walk the old town with its village museum, narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings and flowered window boxes. There are many fine restaurants in town or nearby by the old church ruins.

Day 12 Fatima, Batalha and Nazare

In the morning you will take a drive to the town of Fatima famous for the sighting of the Virgin Mary early in the 20th Century. You visit the Shrine to Mary and than head for Batalha to visit the Monastery of Santa Maria da Victoria, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You then head east to the coast and the fishing port of Nazare where you have lunch. You then return to Obidos.

Day 13 At Leisure in Lisbon

In the morning you return to Lisbon where you will have some free time in the town center for shopping or a leisurely lunch. Later in the afternoon your driver will pick you up to take you to your hotel and a farewell dinner.
