Day 1 Depart USA

You board your flight for the overnight flight to Vietnam and its capital, Hanoi

Day 2 En Route

During your flight you will cross the International Date Line technically "losing" a day but you will regain it on your return flight

Day 3 Welcome to Hanoi

Arriving in Hanoi you will be met by our representative. They will facilitate your expeditious move through customs and immigration and assist you with the retrieval of your luggage. Once in the arrivals hall you will be introduced to your personal guide and escorted out to your car where your driver is waiting. Arriving at your hotel, your guide will assist with check-in and coordinate the next day's agenda. You then are free to relax. This evening enjoy a quiet dinner in the hotel and a good night's rest.

Day 4 Cultural and Historic Highlights of Hanoi

After breakfast, you meet your guide at your hotel and depart on your private tour of Hanoi.Your first stop will be Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, as well as his private residence from 1954 until 1969. The wooden ethnic minority style house, which was built on stilts, is surrounded by lovely peaceful gardens. In the same complex you will see the One Pillar Pagoda, founded by King Ly Thai To in 1049. Your tour continues to the National Fine Arts Museum, located in colonial France's former Ministry of Information, which has an eclectic mix of contemporary Vietnamese art and sculptures. Your next stop will be the Temple Of Literature, Vietnam's first university. Constructed in 1070, the gardens and well-preserved architecture offer a relaxing glimpse into Vietnam's past. Enjoy lunch at the Wild Lotus restaurant before continuing on to Hoa Lo Prison (formerly known as the "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam war). The last stop of the day before returning to your hotel will be the Museum of Ethnology where you will get the chance to see Vietnam's diverse culture through the Museum's unique presentation of artifacts and dress used in daily life. In the early evening you will attend a traditional water puppet show, a uniquely northern Vietnamese art form especially designed for depicting scenes from rural life and episodes of national history. You then head to an ancient leafy village on the outskirts of Hanoi where you have dinner at La Verticale headed by award winning chef Didier Cortou.

Day 5 Cruising and Cycling in Tam Coc and Hoa Lu
In the morning, your guide will be waiting to escort you to the car for the trip to Ninh Binh. The Ninh Binh region is one of the most beautiful parts of Vietnam which you will explore today both by sampan and bicycle. After stopping for a cool drink in Ninh Binh you head to the Tam Coc area where you board a private sampan for a cruise down the river. Tam Coc means " Three Caves" and you have a chance to experience the caves as your sampan cruises through them. Rice fields pass you by and you are exposed to the limestone karsts which dominate the landscape. After lunch you, along with your guide, board bicycles for a charming trip through spectacular scenery of rice fields, karst formations and quaint rural villages. After your tour you return to Hanoi to freshen up. This evening, dinner is at The Green Tangerine.

Day 6 Halong Bay and the Red River Delta

Depart Hanoi for Halong by road. The journey through the rich farmlands of the Red River Delta allows you to enjoy the scenery of rice fields, water buffalo and everyday Vietnamese village life. Arrive in Halong and check in at the Emeraude Cafe. Feel as if you are stepping back in time to French Indochina as you board a wonderful replica of one of the classic steamships of the era. a welcome drink will be served as the boat leaves the harbor. Have lunch as you cruise among hundreds of islets to discover unspoilt pockets of Halong Bay and visit " Sung Sot" one of the most imposing grottos of the Bay. As the boat cruises through the limestone karsts and clear waters in the afternoon, several options are available. On board kayaks are available for rental for those wishing to go out for a paddle or take a dive into the clear waters from the boat's own platform. For those seeking a more culinary experience, take part in a Vietnamese spring roll cooking demonstration on the sundeck. After the sun sets, enjoy a delicious international and Vietnamese buffet dinner. After dinner the award winning film " Indochine" starring Catherine Deneuve will be screened on the sundeck should you desire to watch a movie before retiring to your cabin for a good night's sleep.

Day 7 Halong Bay, Old Hanoi and Hoi An


On your return to Halong City enjoy a full breakfast as your boat weaves its way back to the dock. Upon disembarkation your guide will meet you for the transfer back to Hanoi. You arrive back in Hanoi in time for lunch . In the afternoon enjoy a tour by cyclo, a chauffeur-pedaled tricycle, through Hanoi's Old Quarter, also known as "36 streets". This bustling area of narrow streets and alleys is home to literally thousands of small businesses and shopkeepers. It's a great place to explore, especially by cyclo, with plenty of photo opportunities all around you. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for a flight to Danang where you are met by your guide and escorted to Hoi An and your delightful villa on the beach

Day 8 Learning to Fish and Exploring Hoi An
This morning you will have a unique cultural experience as you learn the art of Vietnamese fishing by exploring the inner life of the local fishermen. You will be taken to a local fishing village and learn how to spread a traditional Vietnamese fishing net, called a "ro", from a small round bamboo basket boat called a "thung chai" which Vietnamese fishermen have employed for centuries to ply their trade. You then have a chance to have a very fresh seafood lunch onboard a boat before returning to the dock. Your guide will then take you on a tour of the town. Hoi An's architecture and relaxed lifestyle have changed little over the years. Take a leisurely walking tour of the ancient town center and visit the sites of former merchants' homes, a 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, and a Chinese Communal Hall. Before lunch, enjoy browsing and shopping in the one of the most colourful local marketplaces in all of Southeast Asia. Lunch is at Brother's cafe. In the afternoon embark upon a private boat to take a three-hour cruise on the Thu Bon River with stops at Thanh Ha Pottery Village, Kim Bong Carpenters' Village, and Hoi An's large shipbuilding yard.

Day 9 Farming in Tra Que and Crossing the Hoi Van Pass
This morning you will head into Hoi an where you pick up a bicycle for a ride to a local farm in Tra Que Village. Upon arriving at the village your guide will give you an overview of the farm and you can, if you choose, join the farmers in preparing and fertilizing the garden with seaweed. You can also participate in raking, sowing and watering or picking greens. The main point is to share the experience with the local people. After your " chores" you will be shown how to prepare the " tam huu", a local delicacy which you can share with your new friends before returning to Hoi An. You will depart Hoi An for Hue via Danang. Your guide and your driver will take you over the beautiful Hoi Van Pass, Vietnam's geographical and psychological boundary between north and south. The peak of the pass lies perpetually shrouded in clouds. In Danang you will visit the Marble Mountains, five scared hills containing dozens of Buddhist shrines before proceeding on to Hue, the former capital of Vietnam and still considered to be the intellectual capital.Tonight you will dine in a private villa with connections with the ancient Hue Royal Imperial Court. The lady of the house will personally prepare an extraordinary Vietnamese meal which will be served in the traditional manner in the private gardens of her home.

Day 10 Exploring the Imperial City

Depart your hotel this morning for a private tour of Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam. A boat trip along the romantically named Perfume River carries you through a tranquil setting of gardens and lakes where Hue's best-known religious sites, the Thien Mu Pagoda and the mausoleum of former Emperor Minh Mang are located. Have lunch at the Ancient Hue Restaurant. Following lunch, continue your tour to the elaborate mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh and the Imperial Citadel, from where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled between 1802 and 1945.

Day 11 Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and a Family Dinner
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for the flight to Ho Chi Minh City which is still called Saigon by the locals. Upon arrival you are met by your guide and escorted to your hotel where you have lunch. In the afternoon, your private city tour of vibrant Saigon includes the landmark Reunification Hall, formerly known as the Presidential Palace. It was towards this modern building that Viet Cong tanks rolled on the morning of April 30, 1975 as Saigon fell. This fascinating building is filled with history still fresh in the minds of many. Your tour also includes the red-brick Catholic cathedral of Notre-Dame, the nearby 19th century Empire-style Post Office, and the next door ‘Hotel de Ville' or City Hall all look indomitably European, in contrast, you visit the Thien Hau Temple, a Chinese temple in Cholon, the packed and bustling Chinatown of the city. In the evening you will be taken to a private home in the suburbs where you have a chance to spend the evening getting to know a modern Saigon family while enjoying flavorful, enticing and intriguing Vietnamese dishes. In this cozy and informal atmosphere you will exchange views on life in Vietnam and back home and come away with a better understanding of contemporary Vietnam.

Day 12 The Cu Chi Tunnels
Today's morning tour takes you to visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. This incredible underground tunnel network was constructed by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The tunnels show the ingenuity and resoucefulness of the Vietnamese people. During your visit you will see the secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. If you are adventurous you can explore the deeper second and even third level tunnels. If, however, you prefer to remain above ground there is ample opportunity to view excavated areas from above. Your guide can tell you the length and difficulty of each tunnel before entering and some are easily accessible by stairs. After lunch at An Vien restaurant, the afternoon is left open for shopping.

Day 13 A Cruise on the Mekong Delta
After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and assist you to your boat which is docked in the Mekong Delta in the town of Cai Be. Upon arrival you board the boat where a welcome drink awaits you. You are introduced to the crew and shown to your cabin. Your boat sets sail towards Cho Lach on the Tien Giang River while you enjoy lunch on the upper deck. You are invited to rest and relax on the deck as the boat cruises into Cho Canal. A short cruise takes you through local traffic of sand and rice barges, fruit drying facilities and wooden ship building yards, life on the river. Your first stop is a village on the banks of the river Mang Thit where you have the opportunity to appreciate the hospitality and way of life of the locals as you visit the nearby orchards and rice fields. After re-boarding the boat, enjoy a " welcome back aboard" drink as you return to your lounge chair on the deck to watch the magnificent sun set on the Delta. A lovely dinner is served while the boat is cruising the Mang Thit River. This evening the boat sets anchor in front of Phuoc Huu Pagoda in Tra On.

Day 14 The Floating Markets of the Mekong
Breakfast is available on deck while the boat cruises to Tra On Floating Market. After a visit to the colorful market, your boat sails towards Can Tho. Upon arrival at the Cai Rang floating market you transfer on to a local boat to visit the market, the nearby canals and gardens ending at the Ninh Kieu pier late in the morning. You meet up with your guide and have lunch en route to Saigon. You have time for some last minute shoppiong and then a  chance to freshen up. This evening, your last in Vietnam, will be spent at XU, one of the city's best restaurants.

Day 15 Return to USA

In the morning your guide will be waiting to take you to the airport for your flight back to the US. You " gain" the day you previously lost and arrive back the same afternon.
