Day 1 Depart USA

You board your aircraft for the overnight flight to Vienna, center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and fueled by the waltzes of Johann Strauss.

Day 2 Welcome to Austria

You arrive in Vienna and after customs formalities you meet your guide who escorts you to your car. On the way to your hotel, your guide will give you an overview of this Imperial City including the Ringstrasse, the main thoroughfare, the State Opera House and the Museum of Fine Arts, the repository of the priceless Hapsburg Art Treasures. You will also see Parliament, City Hall and the MuseumsQuartier which is the city's cultural district. After arriving at the hotel you have the rest of the day to relax and take a stroll around the elegant neighborhood. In the evening enjoy dinner at the hotel

Day 3 An Exploration of Vienna

Today you have a chance to compare two aspects of the city from the regal presence of the Hapsburgs at the end of the 19th Century and the fictional life of Harry Line in Post World War II as immortalized by Orson Welles in "The Third Man". You meet your guide in the lobby and head to the Schonbrunn Palace which was the summer residence (along with Salzburg) for the Hapsburgs. With 1,400 rooms it was designed to rival Versailles and almost does. You then head to The Hofburg Palace which was the winter palace for the Hapsburgs and today is a multi-use facility accommodating the President of Austria and 5,000 bureaucrats, the Imperial apartments (which you will visit), the Spanish Riding School, home of the Lipizzaner stallions (which you will also visit) and the Cathedral where, for part of the year, the Vienna Boys' Choir performs at Sunday Mass. Over lunch your guide will tell you how all the things you have seen relate to the Hapsburg narrative. In the evening you will see another view of Vienna as your knowledgeable host takes you to the streets where, in 1949, Carol Reed filmed The Third Man famous for the Zither music theme and the famous Ferris wheel at Prater Park. You too will ride the Ferris wheel before enjoying a boisterous dinner at a wine tavern in Grinzing, a tad touristy but, when in Vienna...

Day 4 Tales from the Vienna Woods

After breakfast, your guide will be waiting to take you into the Wienerwald which we know as the Vienna Woods particularly the Strauss waltz. Your destination is the Hapsburg hunting lodge which is noted for its architecture but also for its notoriety since it was the scene of the largest Hapsburg scandal. At the end of the 19th Century, Crown Prince Rudolph was the only son and the heir to the throne of Emperor Franz Joseph. He was also the lover of Baroness Vetsera whom, needless to say, was not his wife. In 1889, both were found dead and though it was initially covered up it later came out that it was a suicide pact wherein Rudolph shot the Baroness and then later in the day, himself. The lodge has now been turned into a chapel in honor of Rudolph. You return to Vienna for some free time. In the evening you have specially reserved seats for dinner and a concert at Schonbrunn Palace where the works of both Strauss and Mozart will be performed.

Day 5 The Morning Train to Budapest

The Hapsburgs ruled over a joint Kingdom of both Austria and Hungary (with Bohemia thrown in). You have seen the Austrian capital and now you move east to the Hungarian Capital of Budapest. In the morning your driver will take you to the station where you board the train to Budapest. 1st Class seats are reserved to ensure both a comfortable and a scenic journey. After a three hour journey, you arrive in Budapest. This charming capital is bisected by the Danube River with hills and valleys on the Buda side and the flat, low-lying Pest on the other. The riverside panorama has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Upon arrival you meet your guide before having lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch you explore Pest including Heroes' Square, Vajdahunyad Castle, Andrassy Street, the Opera House, St. Stephen's Basilica and the Parliament. You then board a boat for a cruise on the Danube to Marguerite Island. This is very reminiscent of Paris as you stroll among the tress and pathways in the middle of the river and the city. This evening, dinner is at the hotel.

Day 6 The Buda Side of Town

You have the chance to have a leisurely breakfast and then stroll among the elegant shops near your hotel. Later in the morning you will be taken for lunch at a local restaurant before commencing your sightseeing. In the afternoon you start your visit on the Buda side with a visit to the Fisherman's Bastion, a neo-Romanesque edifice with seven towers built on the medieval walls and offering spectacular views of the city. You then go to the Castle district and a visit to Matthias church, Budapest's most famous church and dating back to the 13th Century. While in the Castle district you will be taken to the Royal House of Wines for an introduction to fine Hungarian wines. This evening your dinner at a restaurant is enhanced by atmospheric gypsy music.

Day 7 A Day on the Plains, a Night on the Town

After breakfast, you will depart the city for the Hortobagy Puszta, the most well known part of the Great Hungarian Plain (known as the Puszta). This national park allows you to become acquainted with the region's flora and fauna. You will visit the Museum of the Shepherd where you enjoy a carriage ride, a thrilling equestrian show and have a chance to view some of the unusual and indigenous animals including long-horned Hungarian Grey cattle, stud horses, spiral horned Racka sheep and buffalo herds. After the visit you will have a lunch with wine at a local Csarda restaurant before returning to the city where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure. In the evening you will be taken to Gundel's the world famous restaurant located in a park setting. In the early 20th Century it was considered one of the finest restaurants in the world but fell on sadder days under Soviet rule. After emancipation, the property was bought by George Lang, a Hungarian by birth and owner of Café des Artistes in New York. He restored both the building and its cuisine to its former level which you now have the chance to enjoy. Your four course meal is accompanied by Champagne and white and red wine as you toast your visit to Hungary.

Day 8 Slovakia and Bratislava

In the morning your driver will take you to the station where 1st Class seats are reserved on the express train to Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia. Before there was a Slovakia, there was a Czechoslovakia but before that this area was firmly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. You arrive in Bratislava at lunch time. You guide meets you at the station and initially takes you to lunch and gives you an overview of the country and the city. After lunch you visit the old town and Bratislava Castle which was originally a Roman frontier post from the 1st through the 5th Centuries AD. After your tour you are taken to your hotel which is a former townhouse recognized as a cultural landmark.

Day 9 The Charms of Bratislava

Using your hotel as a base, you are free to explore the many charms of Bratislava, big enough to be cosmopolitan but small enough to be charming. There are excellent museums, good shopping and sidewalk cafes for people watching. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Bratislava's best restaurants.

Day 10 Return to USA

In the morning your driver will be waiting to take you on the short drive to Vienna airport for the return trip to the USA where you arrive back later that same day.
