Personal Highlights:

  • Exploring the medieval wonder of Chester Cathedral
  • The scenic beauty of Snowdonia National Park
  • Candlelit dinners overlooking the bay at Penally
  • The tranquil beauty of the Wye Valley
Day 1 Depart USA

You board your Business Class flight for the overnight trip to Manchester and the beginning of your Welsh adventure.

Day 2 Welcome to Chester

You arrive in Manchester where your driver is waiting to take you on an orientation view of the city of Manchester before heading to the beautiful town of Chester. Upon arrival you have a chance to relax in your deluxe hotel located in the center of the town. Dinner tonight is in the hotel's justly famed restaurant.

Day 3 Exploring Roman, Saxon and Medieval Chester

You start this day by walking the walls that surround the city. Parts were built by the Romans and others in medieval times. Chester is the only city in Britain that retains the full circle of its defensive walls. From the walls and watchtowers you can look down at the town and the River Dee. In the distance you can see the hills of Wales. Your next stop is Chester Cathedral. There has been a church on this site for over 1,000 years first as a Saxon Minster then a Benedictine Abbey and finally as a cathedral in 1541. The hand carved choir seats are over 800 years old and the cathedral houses one of the most complete medieval monastic complexes in Britain. Did we mention that Chester is reputed to be one of Britain's most haunted cities? After lunch you head to the Chester Rows which are black and white wooden buildings where the basements are actually open to the street. While located in old buildings, the shops are all up to date so we leave the rest of the afternoon for shopping.

Day 4 The North Coast, Anglesey and Snowdonia

After breakfast you meet your driver and head west, joining up with the coastal road on the Northern side of Wales. You will pass through many seaside resorts before arriving at Conwy Castle where you stop for a visit. You then cross the Menai Bridge which connects the Island of Anglesey with the Welsh mainland. This island was the last Druid holdout against the Romans and was a major source of copper to Britain up to the middle of the 20th Century. Your next stop will be Caernarfon Castle where Prince Charles was invested by the Queen as Prince of Wales. You arrive at your hotel which was built in the 17th Century although portions of the building including the tower date back to the 13th Century. If you are athletic you can climb the narrow winding staircase. Once at the top you will be rewarded by superb views of Conwy Castle and the mountains of Snowdonia.

Day 5 Snowdonia, Conwy Castle and Bodnant Gardens

Your hotel is situated overlooking the stunning edifice of Conwy Castle and its surrounding walled city. It was built by the English King Edward I as a means, along with other castles around Wales, of subjugating the Welsh. The castle itself is impressive and in exploring the town within the walls you have the chance to visit the "best preserved Medieval town house in Britain" In the afternoon you will visit Bodnant, one of the world's most spectacular gardens with huge Italianate terraces and formal lawns on its upper level and a wooded valley, stream and wild garden below.

Day 6 Porthmadog, Portmeirion and Pembrokeshire

After breakfast you set out for a trip down the Western Coast of Wales. Your first stop will be Porthmadog, in earlier times a busy shipping port for the international slate trade and now a favorite of yachtsmen. Your next stop will be the unusual town of Portmeirion the Italianate village built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Located on a cliff top, the village is built to a smaller scale and surrounded by woodlands and sandy beaches. It served as the location for "The Prisoner" a cult TV series in the 1960's starring Patrick McGoohan. You continue on down the coast with Cardigan Bay on your right and, beyond the bay, St. George's Channel and Ireland. You will have lunch in Aberystwyth a noted seaside resort before continuing your journey to the coast of Pembrokeshire and your hotel with superb views of Caldey Island and the Gower Peninsula.

Day 7 Pembroke Castle, Carew Castle and Relaxation by the Sea

Today you go on a search for more castles. You start with Pembroke Castle, located on the banks of a river estuary and the birthplace of Henry Tudor, father of Henry VIII and grandfather of Elizabeth I. The castle is well preserved and there are a lot of passages, tunnels and stairwells to explore. You then visit Carew Castle with a history spanning 2,000 years and a good illustration of the development of a building from a Norman fortification to Elizabethan Country House. The castle sits on a 23 acres tidal pool and offers intriguing vistas. You return to the hotel for lunch and a chance to relax in the hotel's grounds or walk the nearby beach. Dinner at the hotel, as always, is by candlelight.

Day 8 The Drive to Monmouthshire

This morning you head east towards Monmouthshire and the English Border. To your right is the Southern Coast of Wales facing the Bristol Channel and the location of the major Welsh cities of Swansea and Cardiff. You will stay in the countryside however to enjoy the scenery. You arrive in Abergavenny and your hotel situated on 20 acres of private park land. You have a chance to relax before dinner.

Day 9 The Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons and the Vale of Usk

You will start your scenic exploration in the Wye Valley hailed as the most romantic valley in Wales and the inspiration for painters and poets like Turner and Wordsworth who incorporated the valley in their work. Three centuries later the scenery is just as splendid. The area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and deservedly so. One of the man made wonders is Tintern Abbey built by Cistercian Monks in the 12th Century and inspiration for one of Wordsworth's most famous poems. After visiting the remains of the abbey you move to a different environment. The dramatic landscapes of the Brecon Beacons National Park are a stark contrast to the Wye Valley. Here the sweeping views are of rugged escarpments, mountains and untamed moorland panoramas. This is the source of the river Usk, a fisherman's paradise. As the River Usk moves southwards, the vale opens out into gentle countryside reminiscent of the Wye Valley but not so well known. After your exploration you return to the hotel.

Day 10 Gloucester Cathedral, the Cotswolds and Royal Bath

You head back into England visiting the charming town of Gloucester and its 900 year old cathedral with its Romanesque and Perpendicular architectural styles. Edward II is buried in the Cathedral. You then head south through the Cotswolds one of England's more scenic areas with quaint villages with even quainter names. You will stop for lunch at a country inn before continuing your journey to Royal Bath. Upon your arrival you are met and taken on a walking tour of the town including the famous Roman Baths, the Crescent and sites associated with Jane Austen. You then return to the hotel where dinner awaits.

Day 11 Return to USA

Your driver will be ready to drive you to the airport for your return flight to the US.
