After lunch, your guide will pick you up for a personalized introduction to Delhi. You will visit Humayun's Tomb, the first major example of Mughal architecture in India and an inspiration for the Taj Mahal. You will also visit the site of the cremation of Gandhi, the non-violent leader of Indian independence. Tonight enjoy an intimate welcome dinner at the hotel's famed restaurant " The Spice Route" considered as one of the top ten restaurants in the world by Conde Nast Traveler.

Day 4 The Shatabdi Express to Armitsrar

You awake early for the transfer to the station where 1st Class seats on the Statbadi Express have been reserved for the trip to Amritsrar which means 'pool of nectar' and derives its name from the water that surrounds Swarnmandir, the holiest temple of the Sihks; also known as the Golden Temple. Upon arrival your are met and taken for lunch before being taken on a private tour of the city.It was founded in 1577 to be the epicenter of the Sikh religion. The history of Armitsrar was far from a peaceful one however as the Sikhs defended the town from both Hindu and Muslim kings until a fortified wall was built. During the colonial period, this was the site of the massacre of unarmed protesters by British troops. After independence the Golden Temple was the site of an attempted mutiny by the Sikhs seeking an independent state which ended when the Army stormed the Golden Temple. Things are much quieter nowadays and you will have a chance to visit the Golden Temple in addition to today's Armistrar, a combination of shopping malls and restaurants and old narrow lanes with very narrow buildings. After your tour you return to your hotel.

Day 5 Journey to the Kangra Valley

After breakfast your driver will be waiting to take you towards the Himalayan Foothills and the charming Kangra Valley with its main town of Pragpur, a Heritage Village. The valley is located in the lower Shivalik Hills allowing you to walk without much effort in and around Pragpur and yet enjoy the cool breeze from the Himalayas. You will check into a suite at your charming hotel, the home of a former judge, and then have lunch. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure and we recommend that you take the time to walk around the town.

Day 6 Scenic Highlights of Pragpur

In the morning you will meet your driver for the short trip to the Dada Siba Temple dedicated to Radha Krishna. Construction of the temple began in 1835 and was completed in 1853. the temple has stunning frescoes on the interior walls and the style of painiting is typical of the Kangra region with brilliant red, green and blue being the primary colors used. After touring the temple you return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon you will take an even shorter drive to Garli a twin village of Pragpur and home to some beautiful villas and a quiet market place with weavers and local craftsmen selling their wares. You have a chance to visit the market and see many of the villas before returning to the hotel. Depending on your mood you can either be driven back or enjoy a leisurely countryside walk.

Day 7 Pragpur and the Beas River Valley

This morning has been left open for your enjoyment. You may decide to walk into and around the town or take time to explore the eco-friendly grounds of your hotel. The buildings stand in a 12-acre orchard consisting of mango, lychee, plum, citrus and exotic trees like camphor, clove and cardamom. In addition the hotel has its own organically fed cows that provide milk to the hotel. This afternoon enjoy a walk through the nearby Beas River Valley. Punjab is made up of five rivers and Beas is one of the main rivers. the walk takes you through picturesque villages, corn fields, tea shops and village homes. You can walk in to the barn of a home and share a cup of tea with them. You then return to the hotel where you have built up a healthy appetite both from the exercise and the Himalayan air.

Palampur is the tea capital of North India. It is not only known for its numerous tea gardens and paddy fields but also for its colonial architecture and temples. The morning has been set aside for you to walk the foothills enjoying the scenic beauty of the Dhauladhar mountain range and the Kangra Valley. In the afternoon you will be driven to the town of Kangra, one of the stations on the narrow guage railway that runs from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar. The station is a charming anachronism with its signals lit manually with oil lamps and messages still pased by telegraph from one station to the next. Despite, or perhaps because of this, the station is charming and if the timing is right you can hop on board for a short ride on the train.

Day 10 A Day and Night at the Home of the Dalai Lama

This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, you will be driven to Dharamshala. Upon arrival you will take a tour of the exterior of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's residence and the nearby Buddhist temples. After lunch you take a walk through the market and, if the weather cooperates you should get to see the Western Himalayan peaks like the Moon Peak and Gaurinath. You then drive down to the Norbulinka Institute which was founded by the Dalai Lama as a center of Tibetan Culture. You will be staying overnight at Chonor House which is part of the Institute. Each of the eleven rooms is different, hand painted by skilled Tibetan painters. This evening enjoy another delicious Tibetan meal at your hotel.

Day 11 Shimla, Summer Capital of the British Raj

Located in the north-west Himalayas at an altitude of 7,000 feet, the city of Simla, draped in forests of pine, rhododendron and oak is famous for its buildings styled in Elizabetan and neo-gothic architecture.Despite independence, the town is like an English country town transported to the Himalayan foothills including gothic cathedrals, shops and iron lamp posts. You will be spending the next three nghts at Wildflower Hall, the former residence of Lord Kitchener, commander of the British Army, and rebuilt to a new magnificence.

Day 12 Strolling the Mall in Shimla

Your day is dedicated to exploring the Mall which starts at the former viceregal lodge and runs about two miles to Chota Shimla or “small Shimla” in the east. We have set aside a day for you to enjoy the magificent scenery from your hotel's vantage point. You can swim in the outdoor heated pool or the indoor pool with windows on three sides overlooking the mountain peaks and the pine covered valleys. you can go back to the mall or try the spa. The choice is yours.
