Day 1 Depart USA

You board your flight for the overnight journey to the Eternal City of Rome where your exploration of the Rome and the surrounding countryside begins.

Day 2 Welcome to Rome

Upon arrival in Rome you are met by your guide and taken by private car on an overview tour of the city. If this is your first time in Rome it will be like watching a movie as you first see the Colosseum or the dome of St. Peter's. Iif you have been before it will bring back fond memories. After this overview of the city you are delivered to your hotel where you have a chance to relax or take a stroll in the area around your hotel. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Day 3 Caesar, the Colosseum and “la dolce vita”

Today the world of Rome both as a Republic and as an Imperial Power will be brought to life with your private walking tours of the ancient Forums of Rome and the Flavian amphitheatre world renowned as the Colosseum. The site of the original forum was, in Etruscan times, a swamp but it was drained into the Tiber River and the original Forum was built. Later as Julius Caesar came to power he built a larger forum in a more "fashionable" part of town. After his death, Augustus Caesar his adopted son and successor built yet another Forum to recognize the arrival of Imperial Rome. You will also spend time at the Colosseum built to entertain the citizens of Rome through Gladiatorial contests of man against man or man against wild beast. . After your exploration of Imperial Rome, your driver will take you to a restaurant  where you have lunch. After lunch the afternoon is free. This evening you will go to to one of our favorite Trattorias where you will enjoy good food, good wine and the good people of Rome.

Day 4 Roman”Castles” or Villas in the Countryside

Today, in consultation with your guide you have two options as you head beyond the seven hills and into the Italian countryside. Your first option is the  area known as Castelli Romani. While this means "Roman Castles", they are not actually castles but a series of hill towns that the Romans have been using to escape the city since the time of the Caesars. Your eventual destination is the town and wine growing region of Frascati but on the way you will have time to view Castel Gandolpho, the Pope's summer palace and towns with intriguing names like Nemi and Rocco de Pappa. Upon arrival in Frascati you will savor some of this delightful and refreshing white wine while enjoying lunch. Your second option is a visit to Villa d'Este originally built for a cardinal and famous for its gardens and fountains. You will have a chance to wander the Renaissance gardens and to admire the artistic wonders including frescoes from the 16th Century Roman School. After a light lunch in the countryside you continue to explore the ruins of Villa Adriana the largest of the Imperial Roman villas. It was built by Emperor Hadrian who acquired inspiration from the structures seen in the Eastern provinces of the empire. Regardless of your choice you will have a delightful day in the countryside capped by a fine Roman meal with wine.

Day 5 Shop 'til you drop!

In the morning your guide will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the heart of Roman fashion, Via del Corso. If all roads lead to Rome then all Roman shopping streets lead here. The three most famous streets are Via Condotti, home to Bulgari, Hermes, Cartier, Ferragamo and Battistoni. In nearby Via Borgognona you will find Ferre, Fendi, Laura Biagiotti and Gai Mattiolo. Last, but not least is Via Frattini where Tiffany, Versace and Byblos may be found. Your guide is available all morning and will provide directions and get you from one area to the other. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy on your own.

Day 6 It's all about the Vatican

Today is another day of choice. You have the option of spending time in the Vatican or following the narrative of a bestselling book about the Vatican. If you select the first option, your guide will take you to the smallest state in the world, the Vatican. You will follow the walls surrounding the Vatican until you arrive at the main entrance. Here you will meet your Vatican guide whose expertise will, initially, explain the secrets behind the creation of Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel. You will then visit the Painting Gallery and the Raffaello Rooms where you will see his masterpiece "The School of Athens". Your guide will then take you into the Basilica of St. Peter's, the largest church in the world, where you will span four centuries of history and art including Bernini's Baldacchino and Michelangelo's Pieta. If you choose the second option you get to explore some of the unique sights of Rome. Not all art is in the museums of Rome, much of it is part if the city in its squares (piazzas) and fountains (fontanas). Your expert guide will take you to a selection of these piazzas and fontanas, many of which were the work of one man, Bernini. You will visit the Piazza Navona which still retains the shape of the Roman Stadium which previously filled this spot. Here you will see the Fontana dei Fiumi with four giants at its base representing four rivers. You visit the Piazza Barberini and the Fontana del Tritone, the Fontana della Barcaccia in the Piazza di Spagna and, of course, the Fontana di Trevi. For those who read "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown, or saw the Tom Hanks movie they will recognize these fountains and their part in the narrative. After either tour you enjoy lunch and then the rest of the afternoon to explore on your own

Day 7 A Day of Leisure, a Night of Enchantment

What do Romans like to do? Well they like to walk, sit in a café and enjoy a leisurely lunch, take advantage of the great Roman shops particularly in clothing and shoes and, of course enjoy a superb dinner, preferably in an outdoor restaurant in a small piazza. Today we have left the day free for you to create your own Roman holiday. Walk the streets, do some more sightseeing and by all means enjoy a leisurely lunch. This evening  you embark on an evening adventure. Your guide picks you up in the early evening and takes you for a cocktail in one of the many Roman Piazzas. Then it's off to dinner followed by a private tour of illuminated Rome. In addition to a fine meal you will see Rome in a new light, thousands of lights in fact, as the Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna and the Colosseum are all illuminated. Of course you will stop at the Trevi Fountain where you can toss in your coin to assure a speedy return to Rome. Your driver will return you to the hotel or you may wish to stay out and enjoy the nightlife.

Day 8 Return to USA

After breakfast your driver picks you up for the trip to the airport where your return flight to the US awaits. You arrive back later that same afternoon.
