Personal Highlights:

  • The stunning views from your harbor front hotel in Auckland
  • A private cruise through the Bay of Islands
  • Learning of the Maori culture in Rotorua
  • Tasting the vintages at Hawke’s Bay

Day 1 Depart USA

You board your overnight flight headed for New Zealand to begin your discovery of the highlights of both the North and South Islands.

Day 2 En Route

Although your flight takes a little over twelve hours, you will cross the International Date Line technically "losing" a day but you will regain that day upon your return.

Day 3 Arrive in Auckland

You will arrive in the morning in Auckland which is the capital of New Zealand and located on North Island. The city is a bustling metropolis with a cosmopolitan lifestyle, superb eating establishments and friendly people. Auckland is known as the city of Sails and has one of the world's most beautiful harbors. With its subtropical climate, extensive parks and the nearby islands Hauraki Gulf, Auckland has a lot to offer. After completing arrival formalities you will be met by your driver who will take you to your hotel located not only on the waterfront but sitting on a wharf 900 feet into the bay. From your corner room you have spectacular views of the harbor. If you want to get some exercise, Viaduct Harbour, the center of waterfront life is in walking distance.

Day 4 Exploring the City of Sails

After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast you are ready to meet your driver for a comprehensive look at this delightful city. Nestled between two natural harbors it is only natural that sailing is a city wide passion, hence the name. Not far from the bays are rainforests that cover the surrounding hills and a few dormant volcanoes also add to the diverse geography. But Auckland is also a city of people with a cultural mélange of Polynesian, Asian and indigenous Maori culture providing the base for this modern city. You'll see a lot of the city today and enjoy lunch along the way. We've left this evening open so that you can walk over to Viaduct Harbour for an evening of fun and people watching.

Day 5 Auckland to Bay of Islands

In the morning you will be met by your driver and taken to the airport for the short flight north to Bay of Islands famed for its coastal scenery and it's over 150 islands which cover the bay. Upon landing you will be met by your driver and taken to your intimate resort nestled on its own private bay and only 60 feet from the beach. There are only three suites all with their own balconies and wide uninterrupted ocean views. The rest of the day is yours before enjoying dinner at the hotel's renowned restaurant.

Day 6 Sailing and Exploring the Bay

After breakfast you will be taken to the dock where you will board a yacht for a day's exploration of this fabulous location. Zane Grey, the noted writer of westerns discovered this area over ninety years ago and became enthralled with the fishing and the lifestyle. You will too. We have arranged for a picnic to enhance your day on the water. After your cruise you return to your hotel balcony to soak up the view before enjoying another fine dinner.

Day 7 Bay of Islands to Rotorua

After your sojourn on the Bay, you are taken to the airport for the flight to Rotorua, center of the Maori culture, geysers, boiling mud pools and some of the best rainbow and brown trout fishing in the world. Upon landing you are met by your driver and taken to your intimate retreat located on the shores of Lake Rotorua. With only eight guest rooms it offers tranquility, comfort and superb hospitality as you will discover with tonight's dinner with wine.

Day 8 An Exploration of Rotorua

This morning you will embark on an exploration both of the Maori culture and the thermal activities in the area. You will visit a local marae (meeting place) and view a traditional Maori performance. You will view the geysers and the bubbling mud pools before returning to the Lodge where the afternoon is at leisure.

Day 9 A Leisurely Drive to Hawke’s Bay

After breakfast your driver will be ready to take you to the wine mecca of Hawke's Bay the location of over 40 wineries. You will be driving south and will stop for lunch before arriving at your lodge, an exclusive, historic mansion which has hosted English royalty and now you. It sits atop a hill overlooking classic New Zealand farm and grazing land. After some relaxation it's time for pre-dinner drinks and dinner.

Day 10 A Celebration of Hawke’s Bay Wines

Today you will team up with a local expert to tour the vineyards surrounding your lodge. Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's oldest winemaking region and is the country's leading producer of award winning red wines. Blessed with a lot of sunshine and a mild climate this is also an area known for its artisan food producers. You will have the opportunity to sample some of the vintages and enjoy a light lunch, possibly al fresco.

Day 11 Napier and Christchurch

Your driver will be waiting to take you to the airport in Napier for your flight to the South Island and the city of Christchurch. First, however you will be given a brief tour of the city of Napier. As a legacy of a 1931 massive earthquake that flattened the town, the current town is a living monument to art deco which was the architectural style during re- building. After the tour you board your flight for Christchurch considered to be the most "English" city in the country. Your hotel for this evening was built in 1876 by one of the city's early settlers. Prior to dinner you may want to inspect the hotel's collection of classic cars including a 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage and a Bentley Brooklands.

Day 12 Christchurch and Tai Tapu

After breakfast, your driver will be at the ready to take you into Christchurch where the rest of the day is at your discretion. The city is the most "English" of cities and easy to get around. We suggest that you take a trip aboard a historic tram, stroll through Hagley Park, visit the Cathedral or take a punt ride on the Avon River. Very civilized and very English. At an agreed upon time and place, your driver will pick you up for the brief but scenic ride to Tai Tapu and the Otahuna Lodge which, translated means little hill among the hills. Ideally situated between the Southern Alps and the coast. After checking in to one of the seven generous suites you have a chance to freshen up before pre-dinner drinks and dinner with wine.

Day 13 A Trip to Akaroa

Since you were very English in Christchurch we give you a little slice of France. Your driver will take you to the quaint colonial coastal town of Akaroa which was settled by French pioneers. Your day will start with a boat ride to view the Hectors Dolphins, the world's smallest Dolphins and unique to this area. You then have lunch at a waterfront restaurant before meeting a local guide who will take you on a walking tour of the old town. After the tour your return to Otahuna Lodge.

Day 14 Christchurch to Queenstown

This morning you are picked up by your driver and taken to the airport where you board a flight for Queenstown, set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu amidst the towering peaks of the Southern Alps. You check into your luxury boutique hotel. The evening is left open to enjoy the many dining and entertainment options available at this Alpine resort.

Day 15 The Spa at Matakauri Lodge

The morning has been left open for you to further explore Queenstown and perhaps get some shopping in. In the afternoon your driver will take you a short distance out of town to the Matakauri Lodge located on a lake and offering stunning alpine views. You can relax in your spa bath or sit in front of your own fireplace before enjoying dinner.

Day 16 The Magnificence of Milford Sound

After breakfast, you start your day with the drive to the airport where you board a helicopter for the flight to Milford Sound. As you fly towards the glacier you pass through the grandeur of the Alps, over rainforests, frozen lakes and majestic Milford Sound before touching down on an age old glacier. The views of the glaciers are overwhelming, with their many crevasses and blue and green ice falls. You will then return to the Lodge with views of New Zealand's southern lakes en route. The rest of the day is free giving you the opportunity to experience the organic Spa. On this final evening, the pre-dinner tasting of New Zealand award winning wines precedes a visit to the owner's own cellar where an appropriate wine is selected with our compliments to accompany the sumptuous four course meal that follows.

Day 17 Return to the USA

You have the morning to relax before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Auckland connecting with your overnight flight back to the US. Picking up your "lost " day you, actually arrive back in the US the afternoon of the same day.
