Your Tour

The Genius of Michelangelo

  • A prodigious genius and the world's most celebrated Western artist, Michelangelo's 75-year long career produced seminal works of art that are housed in Florence. Discover what distinguishes him as a master as you make your way through the museums and monuments of this splendid city to focus on one man's brilliance.
  • The tour begins in the Accademia Gallery; here, the 15-foot tall marble David dominates the specifically created, light-filled apse where he has stood since the late 19th century. Explore the symbolism and carving technique that characterizes the David and his attendant Slaves.
  • Leaving the gallery, you will walk the same streets as Michelangelo did, passing the great Medici Palace. In 1490, Lorenzo the Magnificent welcomed the 15-year-old apprentice into his home so that he could supervise the boy's artistic training and social education.
  • As repayment to his patrons, Michelangelo designed their elaborate family tomb chapel in the nearby church of San Lorenzo. Here he carved the Medici tombs with their enigmatic, reclining figures of Dawn, Dusk, Night and Day. In their unfinished state, they tell us more about the tormented psychology of the young sculptor himself than they do about the family they were meant to commemorate.
