Description of Guided Tour in Rome - Orvieto: Gothic Capital of Italy
- There is Rome, the heart of classical Western civilization, Florence, the Renaissance capital of Europe and Venice, the home of the merchant princes. Everyone knows the “Big Three” cities of Italy. But the Bel Paese is so much more than just big cities. One of the best things to do in Italy is find that off-the-beaten-path treasure where you experience the local culture and unique flavors away from the main tourist centers of the country. Orvieto, wonderfully located in scenic Umbria (yet close to both Rome and Siena) is a perfect example of a charming town which has a lot to offer but is often unappreciated by many tourists.
- In the morning you will be picked up in Rome and taken in a private car to the beautiful medieval town of Oriveto. Situated in the valley of the Paglia river, Orvieto began as an important Etruscan town called “Volsinii Veters”. In the morning you will visit the Duomo, one of the most stunning and famous Gothic cathedrals in the world, a church so beautiful that it has been said that at the end of days the building itself will ascend into heaven. After your visit there you'll have a wine tasting enjoying some of the fantastic local vintages at a regional enoteca (wine bar). This will be followed by lunch at a restaurant specializing in traditional Umbrian cuisine.
- In the afternoon you will have some time to explore and also to visit il Pozzo di San Patrizio which was built by Pope Clement VII in 1527 as a means of providing fresh water to the town. You will then return to your hotel in Rome. There is the possibility of stopping on the way back for a short visit of Amelia or Narni.
