The Sword of the Lord: Savonarola and Florence

  • The Dominican Friar Girolamo Savonarola was referred to as the "Sword of the Lord" for his fiery sermons predicting the end of the world and the downfall of the ruling Medici family. Incited by his preaching, the Florentines exiled Piero dei Medici in 1494 and restored the Republican government.
  • The tour starts in the Piazza della Signoria, site of the infamous "Bonfires of the Vanities", the flames of which consumed many works of Renaissance art; Savonarola himself was burned at the stake here in 1498. We then move on to the Duomo where the friar preached some of his most thunderous sermons and to the ornate private chapel in the nearby Medici- Riccardi Palace.
  • The charming, fairytale-like fresco of the "Journey of the Three Magi" provides a telling contrast to the simple, whitewashed cells at the Dominican monastery of San Marco where Savonarola once lived.
  • Here the painter-monk Fra Angelico worked in silence and created his most sublime works of art. The tour concludes in the refectory of the Convent of Sant’Apollonia where cloistered nuns ate their frugal meals in front of the masterful "Last Supper" painted by Andrea da Castagno in 1450.
