Florence Guided Tour

  • Florence owes much of its artistic wealth to the monastic orders of the Middle Ages that created a profound and refined civilization based on spiritual values. Although rivals, both Franciscans and Dominicans realized the power of art to instruct, impress and serve as virtual bibles for the illiterate. The late 13th century Franciscan church of Santa Croce provides the starting point for this tour of medieval monastic art and architecture. In the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, the sublime Giotto covered the walls of the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels with some of the most important paintings in the history of western art. His closest followers provided colorful frescos for the Baroncelli Chapel and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. On the opposite side of town at Santa Maria Novella, the teachings of the severe Spaniard St. Dominic inspired a stricter and more pessimistic vision. Here the visit focuses on the Strozzi, Tornabuoni, Lenzi and Spanish chapels with their fresco decorations based on Dante’s "Inferno" and the Dominican feast of the Corpus Christi, a dogma masterfully translated into visual terms in Masaccio’s "Trinity" and in Giotto’s "Crucifix". The tour concludes with a visit to the ornate 17th century pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella where medicines and beauty products made from distilled herbs and flowers are still being produced from medieval recipes.
