Cinque Terre or ‘The Five Lands’, is an area noted for its dramatic beauty located close to La Spezia around forty kilometres from Portofino on Italy’s west coast. It features five towns that perch on rugged cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, the villages are Monterosso al Mare which is the largest and most northerly, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.
The area has managed to keep much of its old world charm and avoid a lot of modern development, thanks in part to the fact that it is virtually inaccessible by road. Today the Cinque Terre area is designated as a national park and world heritage site. The best way to reach these magical coastal towns is by train, ferry or on foot! Roads between the towns are not for the faint-hearted! Walking from town to town is a popular and enormously satisfying way of getting around and a great way of enjoying the spectacular surroundings.
However long you choose to stay in Cinque Terre, you will find it impossible not to be enchanted by the stunning situation and wealth of culture to be found there.
The great thing about Cinque Terre is that you can walk at your own pace and for the distance that suits you. Many of our clients take the train to one of the villages and then stroll along the coastal path to the next village stopping for refreshments in the piazza on the way.
