Day 1 Depart USA

You depart on your overnight flight for Budapest, the capital of Hungary. This charming capital is bisected by the Danube River with hills and valleys on the Buda side and the flat, low-lying Pest on the other. The riverside panorama has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Day 2 Welcome to Budapest

Upon arrival and after clearing customs you will be met by your guide and taken to your waiting car. Although we will explore the city in more detail, this morning you will get an orientation tour of the key parts of the city. You will stop for lunch and begin to become at home with this most charming of European cities. You are then taken to your deluxe hotel where you have a chance to relax and freshen up. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Day 3 Pest and Marguerite Island

After a good night's rest you are ready to meet your guide for a personalized exploration. In the morning you explore Pest including Heroes' Square, Vajdahunyad Castle, Andrassy Street, the Opera House, St. Stephen's Basilica and the Parliament building before having lunch at a local restaurant. You have some free time for shopping before boarding a boat for a cruise on the Danube to Marguerite Island. This is very reminiscent of Paris as you stroll among the tress and pathways in the middle of the river and the city. This evening, dinner at a local restaurant rounds out the day.

Day 4 Scenic Views, Fine Wines and Gypsy Music

You have the chance to have a leisurely breakfast and then stroll among the elegant shops near your hotel. Later in the morning you will be picked up by your guide and taken to Gellert Hill for a panoramic view of the city followed by lunch In the afternoon you start your visit on the Buda side with a visit to the Fisherman's Bastion, a neo-Romanesque edifice with seven towers built on the medieval walls and offering spectacular views of the city. You then go to the Castle district and a visit to Matthias church, Budapest's most famous church and dating back to the 13th Century. While in the Castle district you will be taken to the Royal House of Wines for an introduction to fine Hungarian wines. This evening your dinner at a restaurant is enhanced by atmospheric gypsy music.

Day 5 Tokaj… the Noble Grape and Wine of Hungary

Today you depart for the Tokaj wine region to learn about this iconic wine. In 1703 the Prince of Transylvania sent Louis XIV of France some cases from his estate In Tokaj as a gift. Tokaji was then served in the court at Versailles and became known as "Tokay". Louis XIV proclaimed it "Wine of Kings, King of Wines" and it became a favorite of Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Frederic II of Prussia, Voltaire, Goethe, Schubert and other luminaries. Left to fall into mediocrity during the Soviet era, the wine is now making a comeback as you will discover. The hills around Tokaj are honeycombed with caves where the wine is aged and stored and after lunch, you will visit one of the cellars where you will taste a variety of the wines from sweet to somewhat dry. Following the tasting you check into your hotel.

Day 6 A Day on the Puszta

After breakfast, you will depart the city for the Hortobagy Puszta, the most well known part of the Great Hungarian Plain (known as the Puszta). This national park allows you to become acquainted with the region's flora and fauna. First, however you have lunch with wine at a typical csarda restaurant accompanied by gypsy music. After lunch you will visit the Museum of the Shepherd where you enjoy a carriage ride, a thrilling equestrian show and have a chance to view some of the unusual and indigenous animals including long-horned Hungarian Grey cattle, stud horses, spiral horned Racka sheep and buffalo herds. Prior to departure you are offered pogacsa a traditional Hungarian pastry and apricot brandy to wash it down. Your guide will then return you to your hotel in Tokaj.

Day 7 The Sights and Wines of Eger

Today your guide will be ready to take you to the town of Eger which is surrounded by hills covered with wines from whence comes the famous " Bull's Blood" red wine. Eger is also one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary with a Turkish past due to the Ottoman invasion and a more recent baroque era under the Hapsburgs. While in town you will visit the needle-like Minaret remaining from Turkish times, the Basilica and the Lyceum Episcopal with its library and chapel. This evening you will be taken to an area known as the " Valley of the Beautiful Ladies" where you will be our guest at an event known as the " Election of the Wine General" during your three course meal you will be introduced to five different wines of the region and expand your knowledge of Hungarian wines. You will then be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 8 Gundel’s, the Toast of Budapest

After breakfast your guide will return you to Budapest where the rest of the day at leisure to walk the sights and shops near your centrally located hotel. Lunch is on your own but save room for tonight's farewell event. In the evening you will be taken to Gundel's the world famous restaurant located in a park setting. In the early 20th Century it was considered one of the finest restaurants in the world but fell on sadder days under soviet rule. After emancipation, the property was bought by George Lang, a Hungarian by birth and owner of Café des Artistes in New York. He restored both the building and its cuisine to its former level which you now have the chance to enjoy. Your four course meal is accompanied by Champagne and white and red wine as you toast your visit to Hungary.

Day 9 Return to USA

Your guide will be waiting to take you to the airport and assist in your check in. Your flight arrives back in the USA later the same day.
