Description of Trans-Andean Lodge-to-Lodge Horseback Ride to Machu Picchu
Trek on the back of your trusted horse along the a Cordillera Vilcabamba mountain range. Still pristine and not too often visited by tourists, this trail has vistas to inspire, where you can still sense the authentic ancient culture. How often can you travel through 12 different biospheres, possibly witness the majestic Andean condors and so much more??
You must stay in Cusco for a minimum of 2 days prior to starting the ride in order to acclimate.
Day 1 - Cusco to Salkantay Lodge at Soraypampa
- Riding Time: Approx. 4 hours
- Type of Terrain: Open roads, some steep ascending trails
- Type of Riding: Walk, trot, canter, gallop
- Note: Lunch is a picnic lunch en route.
- Non-riders activity: Direct transfer to the lodge
- Sights: Inca ruins of Tarawasi newar Limatambo, Mollepata mountain village.
Day 2 - Soraypampa
- Riding Time: Approx. 3 hours
- Type of Terrain: Open roads, some steep ascending trails and open fields
- Type of Riding: Walk, trot, canter
- Non-rider activity: Hike to Humantay Lake
Day 3 - Soraypampa to Wayra Lodge at Huayraccmachay
- Riding Time: Approx. 4 hours
- Type of Terrain: 80% steep trails , 20% open land
- Type of Riding: Walk, trot
- Non-rider activity: Transfer to Ollantaytambo or hiking along the trail
Day 4 - Huayraccmachay to Colpa Lodge at Copapampa
- Riding Time: Approx. 3 hours
- Type of Terrain: Steep trails
- Type of Riding: Walk, trot
- Non-rider activity: Free day in Ollantaytambo or hiking along the trail
Day 5 - Colpapampa to Lucma Lodge at Lucmabamba
- Riding Time: Approx. 4 hours
- Type of Terrain: Steep trails and some open roads
- Type of Riding: Walk, trot, canter
- Non-rider activity: Transfer by train and vehicle to Lucma Lodge or hiking along the trail
Day 6 - Lucmabamba to Aguas Calientes
Leave the lodge for Llactapata pass and enjoy a distant view of Machu Picchu. Descend through bamboo forests, orchards and simply gorgeous landscapes.
Day 7 - Machu Picchu
Wake up early for the culmination of the tour, including a complete guided tour of Machu Picchu with the whole day to explore the site on your own. Afterwards, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and go to train for departure back to Cusco.
