Day 1 Depart USA
You commence your safari in Tanzania as you board your overnight flight to Europe where you coonect with a flight to Tanzania.
Day 2 Welcome to Tanzania
You arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport in Arusha in the afternoon and are met by our representative who will guide you to your car for the trip to your lodge located in an area that was, for many years, a coffee plantation. After a chance to relax you enjoy dinner and then a good night's rest.
Day 3 Driving to Lake Manyara
This morning is open for you to relax and explore the charming area around your hotel. After lunch you will meet your guide and board your vehicle for the drive to Lake Manyara. Upon arrival at your lodge which overlooks the lake you have a chance to take a nature walk before having dinner.
Day 4 Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater
Your morning excursion will be different as you travel through a rain forest in search of game.This provides a contrast to the plains in the previous and future parks. After lunch you head on to the Sereneti plain to Ngorongoro Crater where you drive through dense foliage to reach the top of the rim of what is, in actuality, an extinct volcano but one of majestic height and perfect shape. Your hotel sits perched on the rim overlooking the vast caldera teeming with game. Often called one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, it is the perfect spot for a cocktail as the sun sets and makes an excellent precursor to dinner.
Day 5 A Day in the Crater
This morning you head out with your guide for a full day game drive within the crater. A sanctuary for over 25,000 animals, the crater is also frequented by the Masai. Today you will search for lion, elephants, leopard, cheetah and plains game before returning to the lodge.
Day 6 Olduval Gorge and the Serengeti Plain
You begin your day with a visit to Olduvai Gorge where Dr. Leakey made his amazing and sometimes controversial discovery. One of the staff will give you a lecture on fossils of both our human ancestors and those of the animals alive in those times. You then continue deeper into the Serengeti, sight of the Great Migration. You arrive at your lodge where and evening game drive precedes dinner.
Day 7 The Lure of the Serengeti
During your morning and evening game drives you will come to appreciate the appeal that the Serengeti has for the lover of Africa. Whether it be here in Tanzania or flowing into the Massai Mara in next door Kenya it represents one of the greatest concentration of game in the world. Throughout the year depending on the season and the weather a flow of game animals including wildebeest and zebras follows the trail of the sweeter grass in a ritual known ad the Great Migration. At times over 1.5 million animals are on the move and with this abundance comes the predators; lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena. Absorb it all.
Day 8 Serengeti to Zanzibar
After your morning game drive you will be transferred to the airstrip where you ncatch a flight to Dar Es Salaam and connect to a flight to this island portion of the country. In colonial times, Tanganyika and Zanzibar were administered separately but with the coming of independence, the names were merged to create the country of Tanzania. This magical island where the fusion of Arab, African and European cultures has created a pace of life, a style of cuisine, and a colourful tapestry of architecture, heritage, myth and magic that is found nowhere else in the world. Upon arrival you are met and taken to your resort which is located on the water in Stone Town, the ancient and current adminstrative center of the island. After checking in you have a chance to relax before having dinner overlooking the water.
Days 9- 10 Exploring Zanzibar
IYou have two days to enjoy all that Zanzibar has to offer. Take a walk through Stone Town, a quaint town that reached its peak in the 19th Century when Arab traders vied with each other to show their wealth by creating elaborate doors to their homes. Over 500 of these doors still remain although many are in need of restoration. Your hotel has a pool by the water but also has its own beach club nearby where you can enjoy watersports and a beachside lunch. You might also consider taking a tour of the many spice plantations to see how they are grown, collected and processed. Another option is to rent a dhow and sail around part of the island. Sightseeing or sunbathing, the choice is yours. In the evening return to the hotel and enjoy an alfresco dinner as the dhows sail serenely by.
Day 11 Fly to "Dar" with Dayroom at a Hotel
Today you will fly to Dar es Salaam where you will transfer to a hotel where a dayroom has been reserved. You have the chance to enjoy the hotel's facilities before heading to the airport for your flight to Europe which leaves late at night or early in the morning. You will connect in Europe for your return to the USA
Day 12 Arrive in USA
Your flight returns to the USA in the afternoon.
