Description of Driving Break - Black Forest in an RS
Starting from Zurich, you will wind your way up to the spa town of Baden Baden in the north of the forest along the western extremes of the forest, including a run over two of the highest mountains in the forest, Fledberg and Kendal.
Spend the evening in the beautiful town of Baden Baden, before retuning back through the heart of the forest, tracing a path along the rivers, lakes and waterfalls that run through the forests central core, and passing through several beautiful medeival villages en route back to Zurich.
Day 1 - Arrive Zurich
Arrive Zurich and check into the Seefeld Hotel, which is set in the Lake District, less than 10 minutes walk from the centre of the old town. Spend the afternoon exploring the cafes and boutiques of Zurich's old town, or take a stroll along the world famous Bahnhoffstrasse. Later that afternoon you will be met by your Ultimate Drives drive concierge who will provide you with a full walk through of the 2 days of driving, handover the driving notes, maps and itinerary and answer any questions you might have.
Day 2 - North to Baden Baden through the mountains along the western extremes of the Black Forest
You car will be delivered to the hotel and you will be given a detailed walk through of controls and navigation unit, you will then be on your way through the Black Forest to your base hotel, the Brenners Park-Hotel and Spa, in Baden Baden.
The initial drive winds its way up through the quiet roads of the southern black forest, along the dramatic Wehr river valley, with its gorge like stretches of road running parallel to the path of the river, before you burst out into the beautiful green pastures and low passes between the towns of Todtmoos and Todtnau. Stop at Todtnau for a quick coffee/comfort break, then continue further north, skirting the shores of lake Titsee, before driving the scenic stretch of road through the Simonswald forest in the shadow of Mount Kandel.
Here, stop for lunch just outside of Waldkirch at the Hotel Waldgasthof, serving great traditional black forest fare, including a home made Black Forest Gateau. From Waldkirch, continue north until you pick up highway 500, which merges into Hochstrasse, one of the best stretches of highway anywhere in the forest, with wide sweeping bends that slowly climb, until you reach the summit close to Hornsgrinde at around 1100M, from where you can admire the views down and across the forest. Continue the journey to Baden Baden, and your base hotel Brenners Park. NB the final stretch down to Baden Baden takes you through a series of switchbacks, which due to the motor racing style crash barriers seem closer to a grand prix circuit that road, not to be missed and great fun....mind the over enthusiastic bikers though on Moto GP training!
Assuming you leave Zurich at 10am, expect to arrive in Baden Baden at around 5pm. We would recommend heading straight for a swim at the Roman spa complex. For a special dining experience that eveing we would recommend dining at Wintergarden Restaurant in the Brenners Park Hotel, two minutes walk away. The restaurant offers fantastic modern European cuisine in a relaxed setting overlooking the hotels private gardens / park.
Day 3 - Return to Zurich through the central core of the forest, with lakes, waterfalls and sweeping trails
This return drive back takes you south through the heart of the forest, down some of the steepest twisty ascents to the beautiful village of Oppeneau. Now continue south towards the town of Triberg, famous for it's waterfalls (the highest in Germany) which, after parking up, are a 5 minus walk away. Subject to time, take a walk along to the falls and up the twisty paths that track their ascent, they are well worth the visit. The falls cascading down over 160 meters along a series of steps to the valley and village below.
From Triberg, you continue in a general South East direction across the forest, and loop past a number of beautiful small lakes in the south of the forest, including Lake Titisee where you will stop for late afternoon drinks in the Treschers Hotel, with a stunning terrace overlooking the lake. Finally you will drive along series of elevated "panorama" roads as you burst out of the forest and approach the boarder with Switzerland, then complete your run back to Zurich, which is less than 30 minutes from the border.
