Day 1 Depart USA

You board our flight for the overnight trip to Bucharest. Dinner and Breakfast served on board.

Day 2 Arrival in Bucharest

Upon arrival you are met by your guide who will escort you to the hotel. On the way to the hotel you will pass through the northern part of the city, called the green area. You drive down Calea Victorie Avenue passing notable architecture including the Royal Palace, Romanian Athenaeum and the Orthodox Patriarch Palace which was built in the 17th Century. You arrive at your deluxe hotel where you have a chance to rest before enjoying a welcome dinner at the hotel accompanied by Romanian wine.

Day 3 The Road to Transylvania

After breakfast your guide will be available with your car to take you on the start of your wine tour. As you leave Bucharest you will be heading out across the Olt valley, one of the most picturesque and the connection between the provinces of Walachia and Transylvania. Your first visit will be to the Curtea de Arges monastery, an architectural masterpiece built between 1512 and 1521. It is here that Romanian kings were crowned and buried. Your next stop is Cozia monastery which was built in the 14th Century by Mircea the Old, the Grandfather of Dracula. After lunch en route you arrive at the medieval town of Sibiu dating back to the 12th Century. This well preserved city was declared cultural capital of Europe in 2007. You will leave your car and take a walking tour of this fascinating piece of living history. You will walk the medieval streets and bridges before retuning to the car for the ride to your hotel which is in the countryside outside of Sibiu. Here you enjoy another fine meal with the appropriate wines.

Day 4 The Jidvei Vineyards and Ciumbrud Winery

Today we begin our wine discoveries with our first stop being the Jidvei Vineyards with over 2,000 acres under vine and a reputation for producing outstanding whites including wines made from the Feteasca grape which is indigenous to Romania. We will have a chance to taste some of their better vintages before proceeding to the Ciumbrud winery which has a well deserved reputation for the quality of its white wines. We will meet with the winemaking staff and taste several of their vintages before enjoying lunch at the winery. We then proceed to the ancient city of Sighisoara which is the only medieval citadel in Europe still inhabited. Of note is the house where Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula, was born. Our hotel is in the city and we will have time to explore its streets before dinner.

Day 5 Brazov, Dracula’s Castle and the Wine of Kings

After breakfast you depart for the mountains and the medieval town of Brasov. This was one of the seven original Saxon walled citadels and its location at the intersection of three Romanian provinces and the trade routes between the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe created substantial wealth for the Teutonic Knights who founded it. Because of its well preserved architecture it is used in many movies and is the home of Europe's smallest street at just four feet wide. After inspecting the town you head just outside to the Village of Bran and Bran Castle which is also called Dracula's Castle since it was built by Vlad to protect the town of Brasov. After visiting the Castle you have lunch and then head for the town of Azuga which is well known for its sparkling wines. You will visit the historic Rhein Cellars for a private tasting of their sparkling wines. It was established in 1892 and from 1920 to 1945 served as the sparkling wine provider for the Royal Court of Romania. You check into your hotel for another dinner with wine.

Day 6 Peles Castle, Prahova, Tohani and Ploiesti Wineries

This morning you will visit Peles Castle one of the most beautiful and well preserved royal residences in Europe. It was built in 1888 as a summer palace by King Carol I and is located in the charming resort of Sinaia which grew up based on the royal presence during the summer months. You then continue to the Prahova Vineyards famous for their red wines and then to the Tohani Winery for some more tasting followed by lunch at Crama Urlateanu another winery but located in a 1922 mansion. After a delicious lunch with appropriate wines you proceed to Ploiesti for some more tasting. You overnight in Ploiesti

Day 7 Cernavoda, Murfatlar and Constantza

You will make your way to the Black Sea Coast today. On the way you will visit vineyards that benefit from their proximity to the ocean and its temperate climate. The vineyards in this area produce both excellent red and white wines. The grapes under vine for reds are the local Feteasca Neagra and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine varieties are represented by Chardonnay, Viognier, originally from Southern France, and the Romanian grapes Feteasca Regala and Tamaioasa Romaneasca, the latter being used to make high-quality aromatic wines. You then proceed to the town of Constantza. This town is one of the oldest in Romania founded by Greek merchants more than 2,400 years ago. From here they exported honey, grains and, of course, wine. In later times the colony was captured by the Romans and re-named Constantiana. Your hotel this evening is a deluxe property on the Black Sea.

Day 8 Return to Bucharest

After breakfast you will return to Bucharest where you have lunch before completing your exploration of the city. You see the Parliament which was built by the Communist Dictator Ceausescu as a monument to his monumental ego. It is the second largest building after the Pentagon and was built when the people of Romania were suffering under his cruelty and mismanagement. It is no wonder that during the fall of communism both he and his enabling wife were taken out by the people and summarily shot. On a more pleasant and current note you refresh in your hotel and head our for your farewell dinner in an historic restaurant dating from the 9th century where it was a meeting place for famous Romanian writers, poets and politicians. You toast your trip with some of the better wines sampled on your adventure.

Day 9 Return to USA

Your guide is ready to take you to the airport for your return trip to the United States where you arrive later the same day.
