Description of Spain Art and Wine Weekend Tour in Madrid and Ribera del Duerto
Spain's capital, as a centre for economics, finance, culture… where you will enjoy, among many things of the most important Art Walk in the world from the El Prado museum collections to the Reina Sofia and Thyssen collections to the world of flavours and tastes of Spanish cuisine with the genuine tapas bars.
Art and culture are central to Madrid life. There is nowhere else in the world with as many masterpieces in such a small area. The Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía National Museum are the stars of this unique route. Inside and out, you will find these museums a delight.
The three museums are located just a few metres from each other and are connected by one of the city's main avenues: the Paseo del Prado.
During your first day we propose you to visit two museums, according to your choice and preferences. The most important are the Prado Museum, one of the world's greatest art galleries, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum with more than 800 paintings, sculptures and tapestries that go from the earliest Dutch masters to the most avant-garde trends, and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, which is dedicated to Spanish contemporary art, with works by Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Juan Gris among others.
Later, a fun evening plan is awaiting you: A private guide will show you the tapas world at the historic quarter in Madrid. You will discover hidden spots, even in the very heart of Madrid, each of which has something special to offer, be it a typical dish, a specific type of wine or its atmosphere. Be ready to stand in bars, drinking slowly but surely and sampling a variety of tapas and wines which, although originally from different Spanish regions, have found their place in the melting pot that is Madrid. By the end of the evening you will have discovered the key to wine and gastronomy and heard many anecdotes of 17th century Madrid, along whose streets we will stroll.
Next day, you will leave Madrid in the morning towards Ribera del Duero, admiring the scenery of this beautiful rural region along the way and visiting two or three wineries with wine tasting included.
The Duero river valley is blessed with a unique mixture of soil, microclimate and an autochthonous grape that produces some magnificent complex red wines. You will visit at least one with old cellars and one surrounded by vineyards, the facilities and being guided through the process and secrets of wine making, from the grape to the bottle.
After the visits you will enjoy a well deserved lunch where we’ll try the traditional and famous roasted lamb of Ribera, perfect companion for the Ribera wine. In the afternoon, before your return to Madrid you can decide to visit one more winery or visit several historical places as the small walled town of Peñaranda protected by the medieval castle with the Palace of Zúñiga y Avellaneda from the 16th century or the town of Peñafiel, and its magnificent castle from the 11th century.
You will lodge at the luxurious five stars hotel Westin Palace. Located in the cultural and business district, the hotel is just minutes from the museums. The magnificent building, highlighted by an enormous stained glass dome, has been a centre of Spanish society for almost 100 years. Enjoy a few days with the best art in Madrid, surprised with the culture of Spanish tapas and discover one of the best wine regions in the world.
