What was once a small fishing village has developed into the world renowned glamour city on the French Cote d’Azur. Historically a shipping port, Saint-Tropez still draws yachts from around the world, some measuring over 160 feet long (50m). There is a regatta held every October in the bay of Saint-Tropez, where each sprawling yacht is more elaborate than the last.
Saint-Tropez’s history is more colorful than a Matisse painting. The name derives from a peculiar legend about a beheaded Roman soldier whose body was placed in a boat along with a rooster and a dog and later found washed ashore where the town stands today. It was a mecca for bohemians in the late nineteenth century, including neo-Impressionists Paul Signac and Henri Matisse himself. The town became a center of creativity and style, often used as a summer home to many Parisian painters, writers and other artists. However, it wasn’t until the voluptuous French vixen Brigitte Bardot starred in “And God Created Woman” in 1956 that Saint-Tropez soared into stardom.
With Bardot as the helm, Saint-Tropez became a symbol of the bold and the beautiful, an ultimate destination for the jet-set crowd. The sun-kissed style reputation continues today, as chic trendsetters dock their yachts in the most beautiful harbor on the Riviera and set off to dine at some of the world’s tastiest restaurants.
