The Incas emerged as a powerful empire in the 15th century and worked the fertile resources found in Peru to form a thriving civilization. The Incas were artists, continuing in the footsteps of their ancestors and creating elaborate pottery, textiles, jewelry and sculptures. Today, the hallmark testament to the strength and wonder of this civilization is Peru's world-famous "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu. Visitors can explore Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountain ranges northwest of Cusco overlooking the Urubamba River.
Although Machu Picchu may be the crown jewel of archealogical sites in Peru, there are a variety of other destinations to be explored. Adventurers can trek up the Cordillera Blanca while history lovers can explore the nearby ruins of Chavín de Huantar. Outdoor lovers can begin on the coast on sandy beaches, trek through the Andes and explore the valleys of tropical jungles running into the Amazon Rainforest. You may come across Shamans searching for ancient medicines and a wild diversity of plant and wildlife within the thick jungle. The less adventurous can also find the high jungle plateaus may be more agreeable for dipping your toes in Peru's ultimate experiences. Often considered less humid and dense as the lower jungle, these high plateaus are excellent for the novice explorer.
