Le Morne Brabant is the stunning peninusla along Mauritius' southern coast. The legend of Le Morne explains that in the nineteenth century, slaves escaped to the hidden cliffs and crevices scattered across the mountain. After the abolishment of slavery on Mauritius, police and troops explored the rock to tell the slaves of their freedom. The slaves saw the troops approaching and, believing they would be captured, jumped from the cliffs into the rocky shores below. The island of Mauritius reveres this story with the name Le Morne, or the Mournful One.
