Easter Island
Easter Island Travel Guide
Easter Island is a living secret. There are theories, studies, research, archeological digs and thousands of books but no one seems to know the truth except for the fascinating moai statues of human figures that seem to gaze across their rocky hills. The name “Easter Island” has nothing to do with religion aside from the day, Easter Sunday, when the first European landed on the island; Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen who sailed into the island whose shores were guarded by monolithic statues. Other names for the island include: Te pito o te henua, “The Navel of the World,” which is widely considered to be the “original” Polynesian name; Mata-ki-Te-rangi, “Eyes that talk to the sky;” the current Polynesian name Rapa Nui, or “Big Rapa,” and the official Spanish name, Isla de Pascua, “Easter Island.”
Certainly one of the most unique places you will ever visit, visitors can hike the volcanic craters where the enchanting moai statues were once created and then later found. You can discover the ahus, which are the recently restored stone platforms that were especially constructed for the moai by the islanders. The entire island is a genuine open-air museum and archaeological site, where almost all areas are open for your exploration and your own hypothesis into its mystifying history.
